Summer So Far

At the beginning of summer, during Holy Week to be exact, my family of five trooped to Jeju Island with extended family and friends. After preparation for a much colder weather, we were set to enjoy our first international travel together. We were part of a group tour and visited lots of places, including the very pink Hello Kitty Island.

And then, we enrolled the three kids in swimming school. For ten days I prepared their things, we waited for their scheduled time, I hanged out for an hour watching them through clear glass, they showered after, we went home and they had snacks. Swimming makes them hungry.

My birthday also rolled around during this time. I celebrated it with my side of the family with a filling dinner, and this cake...

So, that's our summer so far. These days, we just stay at home, with me cleaning up some clutter.

I hope we could go to on a local trip soon, one that is accessible from Manila. Do you have any suggestion?

My Starbucks Card

On our way home from a trip to Laguna, my family and I stopped over at Starbucks to get Rix and me some coffee. The kind cashier/barista offered me the Starbucks card and I chose this dainty design.

Upon registration, I was rewarded with a free grande beverage of my choice. A green tea frap was what I decided on days after I registered my card. The offer was valid for 60 days.

I must remember to treat my Starbucks card as cash as I have loaded it so I could use it in the future and get rewards. What specific rewards? I haven't figured it out yet.

This month, my birth month, I will be treated to a slice of cake together with a purchase of drink. I'm looking forward to it!

My Daughter Discovers YouTube

Ever since my eldest discovered YouTube, Ella has been in front of the PC when she comes home from school and after she does her homework. My hubby now has competition in desktop computer usage.

It all started when she wanted to buy My Little Pony toys for her birthday and she wants to know what is the best. I helped her take a look at toy review videos. After that, she got hooked!

Some channels that she watch on YouTube include:

Bin's Toy Bin - a husband and wife tandem reviewing toys, usually My Little Pony

Disney Car Toys - mom who has a son and they present funny and creative ways of playing with toys, usually Disney cars and Cookie Monster

My Froggy Stuff - creative crafting of accessories for toys and customization of dolls

The Toy Mom - a lucky mom who gets to review lots of toys!

Now that she knows how to read and spell, she enjoys searching for and watching videos about toys. I had to limit her computer time, though.

Do your children watch YouTube?

Boat Lift Choices

No one ever thinks about boat lifts until they need them. Fortunately, we're here to help you make an informed decision about the best possible boat lift you can buy for the money. Here are just a few of your options:

1: Lunmar 10,000 Aluminum Piling Mount Lift

One of the most popular Lunmar products, this lift comes with a half-dozen marine-grade aluminum beams that construct an elaborate but utterly secure carrier for your watercraft. You'll never need to buy another lift!

2: Seawall Mount Davit

If you're looking for an affordable alternative to expensive brand names, the Seawall Mount Davit offers a quality product without the hefty price tag.

3: Lunmar 4000 Sling Kit Steel Mount Lift

Not confident with a traditional lift? Try a sling design instead, which will protect your vessel from all the regular wear and tear inflicted by other lifts. This Lunmar version has even been galvanized for extra protection.

4: Dual PWC Drive Up Floating Lift

Throwing out the traditional rollers in favor of point loading on heavy skis, this lift will save you thousands in the long run. You'll never have to worry about the expense of replacing damaged and corroded rollers again!

5: Rotomag 1500 Boat Lift

Rotate your boat right over the dock with the Rotomag 1500, which comes with a special tube design created for the ultimate protection of your property. Absolutely no part of your vessel will be left in the water when it's raised, making it one of the cheapest, safest and most affective lifts on the market.

Draw For Fun... Again!

When I was younger, I was really very fond of drawing. I copied cartoon characters, drew people from my photo albums, made-up comic strips and drew girls in clothes I designed myself. That interest faded in college when I was drawing just for my course. That interest got lost when I started working.

Now, that I'm a mother and I have a child who likes to draw and likes to ask me to draw, I am being forced to revisit my old hobby. My skill is super rusty and I sometimes feel ashamed to draw for Elle. Well, I decided I want to polish my drawing skills, but this time, using the computer. I need to be technologically updated too, right? Or maybe I'm just too lazy to get a sketchpad, sharpen pencils and take out the eraser. And I think it's more practical since I'm on the computer during my free time. Maybe I'll use the pencils and paper when I'm out waiting and bored.

Here is something I tried using the tablet. pardon my very child-like drawing, I badly need practice. Just so you know, the background is provided by the program. I wish I could draw like that.

This is perfect for this very hot summer season. Enjoy!

Electrolux HUSH Happier at Home

Weekends are equal to family time! It's a time to look forward to after a week of work and stress. It's a time to be comfortable and bond with my dear hubby and our three adorable children. What activities do we do when we stay in the comforts of our home?

  • Read books
  • The children wrestle with their daddy
  • Play with their toys or the gadgets
  • Draw and scribble
  • Watch movies
  • Prepare yummy snacks together
My eldest always volunteers to help me whenever I'm in the kitchen. This is especially so when I'm making a fruit smoothie and she would like to assist me in scooping fruits into and pouring in the milk into the blender. I would like to talk with her while the blender is running but because of the loud noise, we cannot hear each other.

Electrolux recognizes how important it is to make kitchen activities with children an educational one, and I'm glad the company came up with the Electrolux Powermix Silent Blender.

I could just imagine the mom and daughter in the photo above are me and Elle. :-)

The Electrolux Powermix Silent Blender is definitely going into my to-buy list.
The best things about spending a quiet and relaxing weekend at home are:
  • Rest to rejuvenate us for another week of work
  • Activities with the children that give insight to their personalities and preferences
  • Heart-warming conversations and laughter
  • No noisy disruptions
  • Relishing the happiness at home with Electrolux HUSH

Family Activities Planning

When my third child turns 4 or 5, there are a few activities that I want to do with my children. There are some places that I want to go with all of them. I want to experience and learn new things with them.

  1. I would like for us to visit museums like Museo Pambata and Mind Museum.
  2. I long to watch live musicals and theatrical productions like the recently shown Sound of Music.
  3. I couldn't wait to get my hands on cirque du soleil tickets for a one-of-kind experience. And concert tickets like roger waters tickets and radiohead tickets for when they are teenagers, if they will be into that sort of thing.
  4. Someday, we would be able to experience Disneyland and Disneyworld. It was unforgettable for me when I went to Orlando and L.A. many, many years ago. I'd love for my kids to enjoy that, too.
  5. Playing sports like badminton or biking with them is also part of the plan. It would feel great to be getting fit as a family, right?

How about you? Do you have any activity plans for your family?

We Choose Wellness Expo 2012

Just wanted to share this! Too bad this is not recommended for breastfeeding moms and children under 7 years old, since my oldest will turn 5 soon.

11 May 2012

I was at Expo Mom 2012

Ever since my friend introduced me to the "movers and shakers" of breastfeeding, babywearing, mompreneurs and mommy shopping, I have been wanting to attend most events. I have passed the dmv drivers test of my country, and yet, I still don't know how to drive. And I am afraid to do so! I think that I might palpitate under the driving conditions of Metro Manila. So, hopefully, when I get over my fear, I'll be driving myself silly everywhere. I also have so many places in mind I want to bring my children to: parks, zoos, museums, libraries, and playgrounds.

Anyway, I went to the Expo Mom in Rockwell Tent last May 5. This was an event by Mommy Mundo. I went with my third baby Cayla. I posted this photo on Facebook so I got the chance to pick a prize, which was an Avent sippy cup. :-)

Ever since I won an Indigo Baby Divine Intervention Room & Linen Spray from DaintyMom.com, I have been using linen spray every time we change our bedding. I also like the Lavender linen spray from Spa Essentials that a friend gifted us. Now that it's almost gone, I purchased the Indigo Baby Sleepy Head Room & Linen Spray this time. I cannot wait to use it!

I also cannot wait for the time Cayla goes swimming in her new LuvGear SunAlert swimwear. I wish I had purchased it earlier in time for our beach getaway. For Elle and Caleb, I bought them educational books. Shopping for the kids was made more fun with Expo Mom. There's a chance to win prizes that were being raffled off, plus, I also got to see the #RealMoms and some bloggers in the flesh. :-)

Our Beach Getaway

I'm not really a beach-lover. When the weather gets scorching hot, I prefer going to cooler places like Tagaytay. Since my eldest likes to frolic in water and play with sand, we headed to Puerto Galera one weekend. This was my first time to go there. It's also Caleb's and Cayla's first time to experience sand and sea. I also agreed because we'll be riding a boat to the island, which I had hoped my kids would enjoy. Maybe it depends on the kind of boat, because the ride was far from enjoyable. It was very hot inside. Since it's small and open, an air conditioner wasn't required. But I think it does 'cause they covered the windows so saltwater doesn't get us all wet. Then the boat became a heat trap.

Anyway, we did the usual stuff. We took a dip in the sea, no splashing around though because when the water gets in the eyes, you know there'd be wailing. Elle tried making a sandcastle, we collected stones, we walked on the shore, we sat on it and felt the waves on our bodies. We did all these late in the afternoon and early in the morning. When it got too hot, I didn't want us to stay under the sun.

With children, one of which was breastfeeding on demand, I cannot go out by myself for too long. I didn't get the chance to see what the nightlife was like there. I didn't get a henna tattoo or had my hair braided. The only unusual thing I experienced there was when I had a back massage on the sand. There were masseuses going around and people were really getting full body massages right there on the beach. It's perfect, I guess, since they were already half-naked.

The ride back was not smooth as the boat was dancing like crazy. I think I got dizzy. Thank God my kids and I didn't throw up. The two younger ones were crying for the most part, though. The heat inside did not help at all! To be back on Batangas port was such a relief! My hubby said he could kiss the ground, but of course, he didn't.

It really was a challenge to travel with very small children. But, thankfully, we all made it out unscathed. :-D

Maundy Thursday at Ace Water Spa

My mom and my brother invited me and my family to a lovely morning at Ace Water Spa, Pasig, the newly opened branch. The establishment was open this entire Holy Week. This was perfect for families that decided not to go out of town but wanted to go swimming or frolic in water.

No, she didn't "swim"
I liked that the security personnel and the staff made it a point to greet their customers warmly. One of them even kept talking with my eldest.
Aside from the central "waterfalls" system in the center of the kiddie pool, there's also a cute elephant slide installment. The lazy river was a hit for many who opted to relax while lying down on the floating foams. I loved the bubble bed and I would have fallen asleep if I weren't in the water.
It's a great place to "get away" without going too far, if you live in Metro Manila.
After swimming or massages, people usually become hungry, so the Ace Coffee Lounge was a good idea. It also offers lunch buffet at an introductory price of 550Php. The food was not bad. A mini pot of shabu-shabu was part of its offering. I found an amazing innovation there. It's a wet tissue dispenser. A rolled up piece of wipe would come out at the push of a finger. Cool!
It was a wonderful experience and I'm sure Elle loved it. Although, Caleb was a little scared by the overwhelming amount of water in the place (that's my guess), it's a fun way to spend long weekends and holidays.

Making Orange Juice

Because I missed my husband, I decided to make fresh orange juice with my 4-year-old.

Huh? What's the connection? Nothing. Teehee! It's just that I have a manual juicer, we have oranges and my daughter loves the fruit. She asked me to do it with her thanks to Special Agent Oso's suggestion in one of the episodes of Three Healthy Steps. These steps are (not verbatim):

  1. Ask an adult to slice oranges in half.
  2. Squeeze out the juice.
  3. Pour into a glass.
A great and simple activity we can do with young kids, making fruit juices lets them experience how these are made. Squeezing exercises their little hands and the orange taste tickles their tastebuds.

Serve and enjoy!

Guest Post: 5 Fun Activities to Teach Young Children

Summertime is here once again. That means parents are scrambling to enroll their children in summer activities, classes or workshops like swimming, painting or ballet. What if the budget doesn't call for these? One option is to stay at home and do fun yet educational activities together with young children. The guest post for today is about these activities using things that can be found at home. Creativity is key in developing them into more engaging games that teach shapes, motor skills, our body functions and things that go together.

5 Fun Activities to Teach Young Children

Various activities can be taught to young children as they develop. In fact, many different kinds of activities can be taught based on your child’s age and skills. Make a list of activities you’d like to teach them, and divide them into two groups – those for playtime and those for a rainy day.  The activities should range from fairly easy to challenging, and if you want to make it sequential, try to make them increasingly fun.

1. Assemble a Puzzle
Assembling a puzzle is a good way to demonstrate to your children how to fit pieces together. First, you need to set the pieces of the puzzle out on a table or on the floor. Separate the pieces and make sure that the image on the box is easy to see. Explain that the pieces will need to fit together to match the image on the box. Show your child how to move the pieces around until one fits into place. Continue to try and fit different pieces together until the puzzle is finished, then frame it, so you can remember it and show your child that you’re proud of them!

2. Shuffling Cards
This is great way to help your kids become dexterous. First, show the child how this process is done. Hold the deck horizontally in one hand while lifting out a part of the deck with the other. Demonstrate how shuffling is performed by dropping cards in front of one another, very slowly. Then, speed it up, so that it looks exciting.  Explain that you need to move a thumb out of the way to allow the new cards to drop into place. Give the deck of cards to your child and have them attempt the process, but don’t give them the whole deck yet, just in case they don’t pick up right away. You don’t want to play 10 rounds of 52 card-pick up!

3. Whistle
Show your child how to pucker their lips to the correct shape. Do this in a mirror so your child will see their own reflection. Explain that their tongue should be just behind the bottom teeth. Have your child start to blow air out of their mouth until they make a sound. Continue this process until your child can make a sound, and don’t be afraid to laugh – it’ll likely be very amusing!

4. Jump Rope
Place a jump rope in your child's hands to get them used to holding the handles. Their feet need to be a few inches apart with the rope at the edge of the heel. Swing the rope over their head so that is lands on the other side. Have your child step over the rope and swing it over their head again. Continue this until your child is comfortable with swinging the rope. Once a few attempts have been made, have your child start to jump when the rope is in front of them. Once you’ve mastered basic jumping, start side jumping and invite friends over for double-dutch. This can be a great way to make sure you child stays active!

5. Set the Table
Grab all the place mats, plates, glasses and silverware you need for a meal and place them on the table. Have your child set each place mat in front of each chair around the table. When all of your place mats are set, have your child set a plate in the center of each place-mat. Show your child where each of the glasses go at the left corner of the place mat. Explain that the fork is placed on the place-mat, on the left side of the plate. Set the spoon and knife on the right side of the plate.

Gotta Be Sporty, Again!

Sports. I miss watching it. Live! I could still remember the excitement of cheering for your team or schoolmates, the exhilaration  felt when a point is scored or when we actually win. That was enough to get my heart pumping. Although my university usually loses in the most watched game of basketball, State University's pep squad was the champion for many years. The cheering competition, which involves the crowd, was always jam-packed so arriving early and securing seats with your friends or classmates was vital. Something like Ticketamerica.com would be useful. Ticketamerica.com has many seats for all home and away games for college teams like the Harvard Crimson and the Hofstra Pride NCAA sports including the Houston Baptist Huskies teams. Spectators for these colleges would need harvard crimson tickets, hofstra pride tickets and houston baptist huskies tickets.

Don't you go thinking that I only watch sports. One sport that I actively played before was badminton. I found myself missing it one day. I hope to go back to playing it with my hubby, like before, when the kids are a little bigger. This sedentary lifestyle of mine has me:

  • feeling old because of back aches and knee pains
  • annoyed at my even wider hips
  • thinking that my post-pregnancy belly is very stubborn
  • locking in toxins because I don't sweat that much
  • feeling lazy or sluggish or lethargic
All of which are not good! I need to get moving! I could go back to playing badminton, or I could try a little biking. The popular sport nowadays is running. What sport is great for a mommy and would involve fun and family?

Our Praise Book

I had this natural-looking notebook for the longest time. I even forgot where and why I bought it. I'm glad I took this with me after I got married. One day, I had this idea to put it to good use. I wanted to record encouragements from the people in my life and why they make me happy. I wanted to savor the moments that inspire me. I wanted to write down the blessings from the Lord and our goals as a family.

There's a page for each one of us. I have listed down the things I love about my hubby and the kids. But mine is still blank. I hope to get my partner to do the same for me so I'll know what I'm doing right.

Then I put down sections like:
  • God's Wonders
  • Prayer Requests
  • Goals
As time goes by, as I discover more traits individual to my children, the list in their pages will be added upon. They will also add to each others' pages so they would not forget how special and how loved they are by their siblings as well as their parents.

Cherishing Her

As a stay-at-home-mommy, my days are all about the children. Having a new baby, she gets the bulk of my attention so even when I rest, she's still with me. How do I rest then? I lie on our bed with her beside me (because she doesn't want to be left alone). And that's the way we hang out!

So, what do we do when we lay side by side on the bed?
I talk to her.
I sing to her.
I copy her facial expressions.
We engage in a staring contest.
I let her touch my face and she pinches my nose.
I lightly tickle her or do a silly face so I could listen to the sweetest music of all: her laughter!

I used to wonder why babies are cute. Now, I know that it's because being a mom is very challenging. I am trying to savor these times when they are still little. Children grow so fast!

NIDO Fortified Science Discovery Center

One day, I decided to date my 4-year-old Elle at Mall of Asia. I was curious about the NIDO Fortified Science Discovery Center so I allotted time for a tour of the place. Even though I knew she's too young to appreciate Science stuff, I still thought there might be something that could interest her. Or she might learn something new.
Some of the things seen there
What Elle did there

I think Elle enjoyed even though there were many concepts she doesn't yet understand. Some displays I thought she liked were:
  • The Kinect where she danced
  • The iPad storybooks
  • Watching the show about moon landing in the planetarium with the dome-shaped ceiling as screen
  • The interactive fear wall
  • The robots, did you see Astroboy?
  • Simulated airplane-flying and earthquake (although I got confused operating it)
  • The popcorn!
Will we come back? Maybe when she's in grade school. It's always nice to bring children to places like this and museums. I hope we'll be able to go to Museo Pambata (Children's Museum) one day.

Weekday at Megamall

One weekday found our little family at Megamall because my hubby Rix needed to take care of something. There was an LTO there so I also renewed my driver's license. When he separated himself from us after lunch, my kids plus a yaya and I had time to do some kiddie stuff. My 4-year-old rode the carousel twice.

hooray for carousels!
I spied the LEGO room inside Toy Kingdom with just a few kids playing, so I pushed my son who was in the stroller and inquired if there's an entrance fee. There was none, yay!

LEGO play area
building something pink
While Elle was busy playing with the yaya looking on, while Caleb was sleeping in the stroller, I wheeled him out to a nearby yogurt place and had this:

sneaky mommy!
Going to a busy mall like Megamall on a weekday was great because there were fewer people about even at an early hour. Recently, we tend to avoid the malls on weekends. Since we have very small kids, we don't like super crowded places. Hope we could repeat this some time.

Saving While Spending

Christmas is a season most people are looking forward to. It is a time when family and friends get together to enjoy each others' companies and make more memories to cherish. It is also a time to show our appreciation by giving presents. With all these merry-making and gift-giving, it isn't a wonder that there would be a significant dent on our wallets or credit cards. Wouldn't it be great if we could find ways to save money while shelling out for the season's expenses?

Creating a budget for the presents that will be bought and separating it from the household expenses is one way to start saving money. Other tips that I picked up here and there include:

  • Plan your gifts. Making a list of people and ideas on what to give them would be helpful in knowing what to look for when you scour bazaars and sales.
  • Take advantage of upcoming sales. Remember to bring your list with you so you won't end up buying what you don't need.
  • Take advantage of the Internet and online shops. When you don't want to brave a sea of people when shopping, doing so in the comforts of your home would be better. You can save on gas and spend it on the shipping costs instead.
  • If it's possible, get all or most of what you need from your trusted shop so you'll get more items and just pay for a one time delivery charge. Paying different shipping fees for just one or a few items from different stores can be taxing financially.
  • Prizes you won which you haven't used and are in tip-top shape could make great gifts too. I know of a family with kids who attend children's parties and who participate eagerly in games to get as many prizes as they could, and tada! They have a trove of children's gifts for occasions like birthday or Christmas.
  • Set aside a day to shop for your gift(s) to yourself. That way, it will be more focused and you won't suddenly want what you're going to give your BFF.
  • This isn't related to gifts, but, I like the idea of soliciting your family or even friends (close ones, of course!) for everyday useful stuff that they have in abundance, for example, giveaway pens or umbrellas. I know that, for some reason, my parents have a lot of bath towels so when I ran out, I know who to run to. Heehee!
I just hope I get to follow my own advice on saving. Ha ha! How about you? What things do you do to save while spending?

Excited For The Photo Book!

Taking advantage of online deals could prove to be good for our wallets, provided that the products or services are well worth it. It also helps that the companies that peruse this type of marketing are popular like purchasing a Bath and Body Works coupon, or having a buffet lunch at Cafe d'Asie, The Bellevue Manila, which had many patrons when we went there twice. And then we availed of five coupons from Chooks-To-Go, a roasted chicken delivery service, which were life-savers when I couldn't come up with anything for dinner due to time constraint, mostly. I also bought two coupons to a steak dinner at Alfredo's as a gift for my parents. I hope they enjoyed them.

I also featured a US-based online deal-buying site called Mamapedia, now it's Mamasource, I think.

We had pictures of the "maternity shoot" of my 2nd pregnancy, the newborn shoot of baby Caleb, his dedication and first birthday that we would like to compile into an album. Thankfully, I saw a deal for photobookphilippines.com where there's a software I could download, then I just upload the pictures to the software then drag & drop them to my desired page layout. I have the option to add scrapbook elements, masking, backgrounds, frames, drop shadows, vignettes, texts, and borders. I also love that I could rearrange the pages easily. I purchased this at the price of 1000Php for a 4000Php worth of photo book.

the interface
After I have finished uploading and designing the album, I would need to click the order button. I just wonder how the pictures are going to be transferred to them. That would remain a mystery until I am through with this "project".  Then, the album would be shipped to me. It's just unfortunate that the voucher amount cannot be used for shipping costs. I am excited to see the finished product! If it looks really nice and worth it, I think I'm going to get another album for the third baby. :-)
