Creative Market Graphics, Fonts and More!

Part of having a blog is the fun of being able to design the look yourself. If you are a frustrated designer like me, this is your chance! I enjoy putting together fonts for the header and sidebar headers, the background colors or the background image and graphics to represent my categories or my blog elsewhere.

There's a wonderful website I go to for new and cool fonts, unique backgrounds and lovely graphics. Every week, there are three products that are available for free download on the site. There's also a bonus of three more on their Facebook page. Isn't it cool?

Even if you cannot download the ones you really need for free, the prices are very reasonable. You can mix and match the elements and create brand new designs.

For example, if you're having a DIY wedding, this set is perfect for the invitations or save-the-date cards, or even a wedding blog:

Pregnant Chicken

I chanced upon this site while surfing for maternity photos. It was hilarious! Plus, it could be helpful to disperse or confirm some common pregnancy do's and don'ts. Like, is it safe to drink herbal tea? To poop hard? I, myself, have a lot of unanswered questions regarding what is safe or not during pregnancy and people say tons of different things. According to Amy of Pregnant Chicken:
I'm not a doctor. I'm not even close. This is only a compilation of the things I found online but surf for yourself and decide which things you think you should avoid during your pregnancy and things that you shouldn't. All I can guarantee is that down the road we'll all find out we chose both right and wrong and it's a miracle any of us are here at all.

Mom Bloggers for Social Good

Stop animal cruelty.
Uphold women's and children's rights.
Protect maternal health.
Spread breast cancer awareness.

These are some causes I feel strongly about. My dilemma is how to get these issues out there and be an active advocate. Thankfully, I was invited by Jennifer James to be a founding member of Mom Bloggers for Social Good. This is a "global coalition of mom bloggers" from United States, Canada, UK, India, Spain, Nigeria, Singapore, Netherlands, Malaysia, Jamaica and the Philippines. We shall help spread the word about the good work that non-profit organizations and NGO's do around the world. The work that they do revolves around these areas:

  • Children
  • Education
  • Maternal Health
  • Fair Trade
  • Workers' Right
  • Environment and Climate
  • Communicable Disease
  • Non-Communicable Disease
  • Access to Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Food Security
  • Malaria and Tuberculosis
  • HIV / AIDS
  • Women and Girls
Non-profit organizations and NGO's are welcome to become partners, please send an email to info@mombloggersforsocialgood.com. Click here for more information about partnering.

Being a member of Mom Bloggers for Social Good enables me to use my voice (however small) in driving awareness to important world issues and helping those who need it the most.

Giveaway Dismay

Giveaways are supposed to be fun and apart from driving traffic to the hosts' website/blog, it should foster camaraderie among bloggers or people in the niche the hosts are reaching out to. I like joining giveaways with prizes that I think I, and especially my kids, could use and be happy about. I am thankful to the bloggers who are generous and are clear with their giveaway rules, especially how the winners will receive their prizes.

My latest giveaway winning experience was not a super pleasant one.

I received an e-mail from the host that I won the diaper bag. I was excited because it was a welcome need although we have already purchased one the day before I knew of the news. This was for my baby boy. The prize would then be kept for our upcoming third baby.
Although the rules did not state that winners would need to claim the prizes in person, I was set to meet up with the blogger at an event. And I was to meet with the sponsor even. I was a little nervous because I have never met a certified blogger. Then, she contacted me and told me that my prize will be sent via courier to me because she wouldn't be able to attend the event. I was asked for my address.
I hoped she had taken note of my real name as I have already stated it in the comment section of her blog as part of the requirement. But, because she used my e-mail address as my name, the prize needed to be sent again since the people who answer the door were not familiar with my e-mail address. One sad part was that I had to shoulder the courier charge.
Another sad part was that the prize I was promised was not the item delivered. If we haven't already bought the diaper bag for my 2nd baby, then we would be wasting another trip to the mall.

I was disappointed with this incident.

What Lies Ahead

I welcome the year 2011 with God's grace, mercy and blessings! A new year entails a new and revised set of goals, some milestones to achieve especially with children.

  • Caleb is going to start on solids already, so my goal is to get him to eat veggies so it will become a habit. I do not want him to be like his sister who loathes greens and orange-colored vegetables.
  • Speaking of habit, I want praying to become our family's habit. Also, reading the Bible again and again I will incorporate in my everyday life.
  • Financially, I need to be careful with spending and peruse sites like Savings.com. I hope I make good use of deals that could help me save money in the long run. Also, I need to market Human Nature aggressively. I am starting with that by giving the products as gifts for any occasion. I wish they would like them and order from me.
  • De-clutter, a word I dread but is a must! Our house is as chaotic as it can be. Practice being ruthless is what I should do when it comes to cleaning out shelves, toy boxes and closets. I have to keep in mind that the more I give out or give up, the more space I'll have for new stuff.
  • I aim to teach my daughter more on the alphabet and to write letters and numbers better. Did I mention that she started junior nursery already last November? I was proud that she didn't cry on her first day and first week of classes. And it's heart-warming to see that she has a zeal for school since she likes to answer her assignments.
  • I also have a new blog, which I call:
Please click here to learn more about it

I didn't include it anymore, but this is the first story I wrote for my blog. The new blog was created on impulse, actually. So I decided that my fictitious stories be stored in one place. I hope to write more and share my inspirations, thoughts and stories woven from my loom of a mind. I also hope that some people will bother to read it. :-)

By the way, this is my first ever entry to Mommy Moments hosted by Mommy Chris.

Want a new bag? I know I do!

Giveaway alert!!!
A Coach Bag up for grabs! Yes, you read that right. A chance to win a Coach Bag.
Isn't that a great prize to celebrate momconversations.com's Ms. Umma's 6th Wedding Anniversary next month? This is her first time to host a contest and she promised that more would come our way if this turned out to be is a huge success. So let's support her and spread the love. She's so generous to be giving away a bag.

I am also contemplating on my own giveaway some time in the future. Some questions I ask:

  • What blog milestone is great for a giveaway? 100 followers? 10th blog anniversary?
  • What is my budget for a giveaway? Am I willing to ship internationally?
  • What should I give away? What item would my blog readers appreciate?

Coupons, anyone?

Here in the Philippines, discount coupons like Savings.com coupons and Home Depot coupons are not very popular. The reason for this is not clear to me. What we have here in the country is a booklet full of coupons, which is bought just one time. There is no cutting, no clipping, and no printing from the Internet. I have seen blogs from Home Makers in the United States featuring coupons and coupon codes that could be used in stores like Pottery Barn, Sears, Crocs, and Target. There are also coupons and coupon codes that could be used for specific product brands like Huggies diapers, Campbell's, Welch's, and Pedigree. It seems to me that they saved a lot when grocery shopping using these coupons. I also admire these moms' diligence in their searches and collections. Coupons would definitely be handy nowadays when being frugal is vital to the economic changes. Using them makes one less guilty when shopping, in my opinion. They would be very useful when purchasing baby products for my soon-to-be born baby boy, when purchasing food items to cook and to stack the pantry with, when purchasing household goods, when purchasing furniture and appliances, and when purchasing clothes and shoes for my family. Almost everything that can be found at home has coupons and it would be beneficial when buying them, even if the discount is not that great.

Oh well, maybe the stores here in the country are not keen on that. They'd think they wouldn't earn and that they have monthly bargain sales in place of coupons.

Some Blog Love

I joined an Alice in Wonderland contest last month where I submitted this blog post over at Azrael's blog and won this cool pocket watch. It certainly is a collectible piece, isn't it?

Want a postcard, too? You can request one from Miss Igorota's blog. She has been to so many places!

Erratum: A, over at her blog, hosted her 100th post giveaway. She said I won a special prize. These are so nice! I've always loved Papemelroti stuff.

Green Blogging

Did you know that your blog can help the environment?

The "My blog is carbon neutral" programme aims to do just that. Here's how you can join. They will plant a tree in Plumas National Forest in Northern California for every blog submitted to neutralize the carbon footprint left. I didn't know that a blog emits carbon dioxide! This helps me make a small contribution to our environment.

Then, I attached the cute button below to my side bar to show my support. There are also other button designs to choose from.

Here's a very nice giveaway hosted by C of mybutteryfly.blogspot.com.This is to celebrate her 100th blog post. There are many interesting things included, I'd love to have them!

And here's a nice video of very talented kids singing a song that was in my head a few days ago, When You Believe by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. What a coincidence! I also have this song in my iPod and it is an inspiring song to listen to.

What's your favorite color of shoes?

Yesterday evening, my younger brother accompanied me in attending the Preview of The Red Shoes, an event where Nuffnang Philippines invited bloggers like me. We fell in line, I signed up then we proceeded to get our share of free hot dogs on sticks, Mister Donuts Smidgets, popcorn and soda. There was even a goodie bag for us with the press kit, a notebook with a matching pen, a body spray and some brochures. The movie was just starting when we entered the cinema.

The movie utilized many flashbacks so viewers could make out the pattern of the story and the reasons for the ordeals of the characters. The casting was good as the personalities of each character were portrayed quite well. In my opinion, the storyline was quite unique from the usual local movies. It revolves around shoes and the characters' preferences for their colors, or lack of it. It happened during a historical time in the country, so to be realistic and I thought this was sort of a glimpse into the life of a fellow Filipino. I know that there are many people out there with much stories to tell that they could make a movie out of. There were moments that made me go "Awww, so cheesy!" "Oh, no!" Why did he do that? and "Ahhh, I see!". Overall, it was an enjoyable movie, light and with an unexpected ending.

There was a forum afterward where there was a question and answer portion as the writer and director got feedback from the viewers, and also answered questions regarding the movie and its inspiration.

To answer the question, I guess I don't really have a favorite color of shoes. It depends on what I wear and if it goes well with my outfit. I'd like to say purple, but I never had purple shoes, and if I am wearing red, I don't think they'd go well together.

What about you? Are there goodies that you ALWAYS like to eat regardless of the occasion or situation?

A Little Makeover

As you may have noticed, my blog now sports a new look. I chose the background because it has stars, and it gives a vibe of treasured memories. The header might be a little too big, don't you think? I was looking around for a simple but cute header, unfortunately I found none.

Anyway, the source of these designs was blogged about by Odette of little miss firefly and I decided to try it out for myself. You might want to check them out too, at Shabby Blogs.

Why blog?

Why do I love blogging?

Through blogging, I get to chronicle my life, the roles I play such as being a wife and a mommy. Here I could rant and rave and no one will judge me. I get to share my poems and thoughts, the sounds and sights I experienced, and gain blogger friends. I also blog about stuffs that irk or amuse me, and find these things in common with people who drop by through their comments, which are much welcome and appreciated. In turn, I also visit their blogs, and laugh or cry with them through their ordeals. Blogging helps make my memories more permanent and easy to access.

Thanks to PM for handing me a blog award. I am touched she sees passion in me, something I was looking for these past few years.

So, Meg, Sandy, Tara, Chris, Odette, Kring, Khaled, Arthur, why do you passionate people love to blog? I pass on this award to you.

The Queen Is In

Here's another award for me given by Andrea of MomWriterMe. It's heart-warming to know that there are people who enjoy my blog and take time to read my posts.

Thank you, Andrea!

I want to pass this award to the wonderful female bloggers on my blog list.

There are other Queen of Blogs badges here, if you want a pink one or a purple one. I chose the silver one because it has a certain shine to it. He he!
