December 2020

December... last month of this uniquely challenging year. As the year draws to a close, it doesn't mean that the Coronavirus is also dissipating. It will not disappear anytime soon, thus, our precautions must still be in place. Let us all continue to pray for a miracle. For those who have been vaccinated, how was it? I know just one person who had the Covid-19 vaccine.

Do you feel the coolness of the mornings? There are also the December evenings that make me want to grab a sweater and run for the bathroom at the same time. While I sometimes stand at the balcony and gaze at the streets, I imagine the headlights and taillights as my moving Christmas lights. They twinkle in and out of sight; red, white, and yellow. I can sense the bright stars and planets just behind the city haze. When rain showers upon our part of the world, the wisps of clouds could sometimes cover the moon.

By now, you have probably received gifts that thoughtful people sent your way. If you have not received any, don't fret, being alive and healthy are gifts in themselves. To still be able to taste the sweet crumbs of fruitcake, to feel its spices and a hint of rum on your tongue is a present. Can you tell I am craving for one right now? πŸ˜‹ What I love about this season is the excuse to indulge in food, ha ha!

Speaking of food, one item on my Quarantine Christmas Wish List is to be able to try food trends. I have tried several kinds ube cheese pan de sal, one type of sushi bake and I have made Dalgona coffee early in the year. I have yet to try sourdough bread and what I really, really want to taste is the Burnt Basque Cheesecake. I saw a seller made an ube version of it, and another had mango.

How do you plan to celebrate Christmas and New Year?

Now that it's super risky to go out and dine out, and in spite of that fact, people are still hitting the streets, there's the holiday traffic to consider; the logical thing is to enjoy good food at home. To add some holiday cheer, I decorated our living area a little. My two girls helped with the window dΓ©cor. Instead of a Christmas tree, I made a Christmas "bush" - as my youngest called it; a shallow square basket filled with faux Christmas blooms, a few Christmas balls, the star for our Christmas tree, tinsel, gift ornaments, and a couple of plushy ornaments in holiday outfits. It's situated on the coffee table. That's where the gifts are, as well.

What do you think of it? For me, it's very simple.

Sheltering in place had me reading and reading. Mostly. I actually reached my goal of 45 books early. Still, I have a long list of TBR physical books and electronic ones combined. Also, some stories are not so good. I wish I could find a hard copy of The Midnight Library by Matt Haig - that's on my Quarantine Christmas Wish List, too. πŸ“–

Reading is my hobby, and also daydreaming. I still do that after many years. Dreaming up stories that I may or may not write down. I also journal almost every day. It's my way of keeping memories, even mundane ones. Reading my past entries also help me reminisce: experiences that I hope to have again, feelings that were hidden. It was also December when I met and fell in love with my now hubby.

Today is Christmas Eve. Tomorrow is all about Jesus. He is the essence of Christmas, and our salvation.

I greet you a very Merry and Safe and Healthy Christmas! πŸ’–πŸŽ„

Christmas Morning 2012

I really hope that each year, we would have a Christ-centered Christmas. At breakfast today, we prayed to Jesus and gave thanks for blessing us with so much, even trials that keep us trusting in the Lord, trials that keep us together. We also sang the birthday song to Jesus. Elle blew out the candle. Afterwards, it's time to open the gifts. This is our Christmas tree.

The gifts represent blessings and the people who remembered us. I helped Elle make "ornaments" which showcased her interest as of the moment.

I had these for breakfast: pizza and chocolate drink with chocolate mint candy canes.

May your Christmas be more meaningful with Jesus' peace, hope and love filling our hearts!

The Spend-Less Holidays Blog Carnival 2012

Would you believe? It's only 19 days before Christmas! If you are still decorating (raising my hand) or still looking for gifts, and if you want to "spend less while savoring the season", there is a blog carnival hosted by The Frugal Fil-Am and Dainty Mom with insightful posts on how to enjoy a meaningful Christmas without emptying the wallets and piggy banks. Below is the list of the wonderful participants.

Because of these moms, I am now inspired to:
  • Decorate our 3-year-old Christmas tree with our existing decor plus gifted ones, but in new  and creative ways.
  • I also want to incorporate my eldest's toys or works of art into the tree.
  • Scour my old clothes and my babies' pre-loved ones for really nice pieces to sell on eBay.
  • Ask my 5-year-old to help me sort her old toys and choose what we will give to other children in need.
  • Re-arrange our furniture and incorporate Christmas-themed elements onto the surfaces.
  • I am not sure if bazaars still accept concessionaires, but, it's a great idea to also sell stuff or yummy food in a preferred bazaar, and use the money earned to buy affordable gifts in the same bazaar where booth was set up. Saves on gas, too!
  • I once sold Human Nature products at two bazaars so I bought a lot of brown paper bags. I just use these to wrap the gifts, decorate them with nice ribbons that were from cake shops or previous Christmas gifts. I also keep shopping paper bags to use as "wrappers." If the recipient really appreciates what's inside, I'm sure he/she won't mind the wrapper. Plus, it's earth-friendly, too.

What to give a guy for Christmas?

Recently, I have realized that it is a difficult task to think of Christmas gifts to give a guy. It could depend on the kind of guy, of course, but for me, an important guy in my life right now is my dear husband. I could give him solar panels to power our home, so to save on the electricity bills. Wouldn't it be great to harness a natural source of power directly? I know that he would appreciate that. But, I am not sure if it could be installed on a roof that is not ours since we're on the second floor of a shared building.

In case you're curious, this is how solar energy systems work in a home

Anyway, hubby is into photography and a new camera body is on his wish list. It's something I cannot afford. The one he's eyeing is the latest model of Canon, if I'm not mistaken. You know how latest models cost! He also wants a new set of computer with better specs which he could use to edit the pictures.

Guys like him would prefer to receive something useful, but most often than not, he already has it, if it's something he REALLY needs.

So, what would you suggest?

I have thought of giving him a pair of pants, a new belt, or maybe a pair of rubber shoes he could use for badminton. He already has many wallets and he doesn't wear a watch. So, I still have my thinking cap on. Any suggestion would be very much appreciated.
Note: Images of the pair of pants, the belt and the shoe are from www.zalora.com.ph, you can shop there and get 5% off for a minimum spend of 500Php if you use my voucher code CymCazza123G. :-)

Elle's Christmas Wishlist

As early as now, my 5-year-old daughter already made a list of what she wants for Christmas. It's a list that was addressed to Santa Claus. It's the influence of watching TV, I suppose, for I did not say that I believe in Santa Claus or confirm that he was coming. Last year, she made drawings of what she wanted and hung them on our Christmas tree. When she did not receive what was in the drawing, she did not cry or show any sign of disappointment. This time, she knows how to write so she made a list of about 10 items. She even included a chair for me in the list. I was so touched by her sweet gesture!

When the next question came, I did not know how to answer. She asked, "How could Santa Claus come inside our house when we don't have a chimney?" Living here in a tropical country, a chimney is something our houses do not have. The only live chimney I saw here was in a log cabin we rented in Tagaytay. I am not even sure if it works. We do not have to pay for something like chimney cleaning toronto, but a house sure looks nice with a fireplace. It's great to put up the lighted Christmas tree near a decorated mantel.

At present, Elle is infatuated (?) with My Little Pony and that is she wants the other characters for Christmas. She also had a brilliant idea. She said, "I'll also show this list to my ninong and ninang." Practical, huh?

Saving While Spending

Christmas is a season most people are looking forward to. It is a time when family and friends get together to enjoy each others' companies and make more memories to cherish. It is also a time to show our appreciation by giving presents. With all these merry-making and gift-giving, it isn't a wonder that there would be a significant dent on our wallets or credit cards. Wouldn't it be great if we could find ways to save money while shelling out for the season's expenses?

Creating a budget for the presents that will be bought and separating it from the household expenses is one way to start saving money. Other tips that I picked up here and there include:

  • Plan your gifts. Making a list of people and ideas on what to give them would be helpful in knowing what to look for when you scour bazaars and sales.
  • Take advantage of upcoming sales. Remember to bring your list with you so you won't end up buying what you don't need.
  • Take advantage of the Internet and online shops. When you don't want to brave a sea of people when shopping, doing so in the comforts of your home would be better. You can save on gas and spend it on the shipping costs instead.
  • If it's possible, get all or most of what you need from your trusted shop so you'll get more items and just pay for a one time delivery charge. Paying different shipping fees for just one or a few items from different stores can be taxing financially.
  • Prizes you won which you haven't used and are in tip-top shape could make great gifts too. I know of a family with kids who attend children's parties and who participate eagerly in games to get as many prizes as they could, and tada! They have a trove of children's gifts for occasions like birthday or Christmas.
  • Set aside a day to shop for your gift(s) to yourself. That way, it will be more focused and you won't suddenly want what you're going to give your BFF.
  • This isn't related to gifts, but, I like the idea of soliciting your family or even friends (close ones, of course!) for everyday useful stuff that they have in abundance, for example, giveaway pens or umbrellas. I know that, for some reason, my parents have a lot of bath towels so when I ran out, I know who to run to. Heehee!
I just hope I get to follow my own advice on saving. Ha ha! How about you? What things do you do to save while spending?

A Sudden Christmas-y Feeling

You know how Christmas is associated with merry-making, gifts, and an over all happy, expectant feeling; I actually felt glum and not very festive. The reason has to do with the financial aspect of my life. I know that it's wrong to equate celebrating this season with money, but that's just how it is in this world. Even with deal sites like Ensogo, Pakyaw, Yipit, Buyanihan, Deal Grocer, Groupon, etc., I wouldn't be able to take advantage of stuff like Chicago daily offers and purchase gifts for family and friends. I even have a wish list of material things that I know I wouldn't be able to afford in years or maybe even decades.

Before I make you all depressed with my rant, it is under these circumstances that God shows me what's truly valuable in life. Sure, I have a long list of wants, but I also have all that I need. He also pointed out to me that I won't be able to bring any material thing with me when I die. Everyday, there sure is something I could be thankful to Him for, especially the intangible stuff like good health for me and my family, God's protection, love of my family, cherished memories, etc.

That wish list could be my motivation for striving to generate income for my family and myself. But, I want to do something that I love, my kids will love, and most importantly, something that God will love and will bring Him glory.

This realization made me feel like a kid again, anticipating the arrival of Christmas as celebrating the Lord not with what I wish to have, but with what I have now.

Of A Projector and Of Christmas Gifts

When my ex-boyfriend and I were still together, we used to go on movie dates whenever we go out. We would watch the latest ones that were showing. I truly enjoyed those times and that's one thing I miss when he became my hubby and after having our daughter Elle. We still went to watch in cinemas when I was pregnant with my first child.

At present, we do not have a nanny anymore so I am the one who is caring for my kids. It is a bit difficult for me to get around: go out with my friends, watch a film in a movie house with my hubby Rix - just the two of us, and run some errands. The reason for this is that I cannot leave my 6-month-old too long with our helper who is inexperienced with babies. I guess this is the disadvantage of being a SAHM. It doesn't help that I don't know how to drive when my baby could just be strapped in a car seat, whenever I need to go to the bank or buy supplies, etc. So, to get that movie experience at home, Rix bought a multimedia projector from the likes of Panasonic Electronics. We have a blank wall in our bedroom that we use as our screen. It was a fun idea! We have tried playing movies from CD, DVD and flash drive. What I want to try next is watching videos online by connecting the PC or laptop to the projector. It seems that there is a need for HDMI cables or an optical cable to be able to achieve that. Elle also enjoys watching her animated movies via the projector. When it is turned on, she would immediately ask us to turn off the lights.

Last Christmas, my family and I just stayed at home. We lazed around and watched movies on the projector. Elle opened her gift eagerly when she woke up. There was just one gift left for her on this day because she couldn't wait until Christmas day itself.

A dollhouse with MP3 player that plays only 2 songs
My baby Caleb is just a few months old, so here is his sister, helping him open his gifts.

Got a car set he can't play with yet
Receiving gifts is one of the enjoyable experiences a person could have. Until now, Elle still thinks that Christmas is just around the corner. With time flying so fast, who knows? It might be Christmas again tomorrow!

To Me From Me (I'm a Sole Sister)

How narcissistic, right?
Well, I bought myself a gift for Christmas 2010. It was a pair of flats. It was something I promised myself I would have. It was the second item I bought online, but it was the first I purchased for myself. I joined Sole Sister's Christmas promo and got the pair for 649 Php instead of the ordinary price which is 795 Php. I had the shoes shipped to me so there is a courier charge of 90 Php.

I love purple (violet, lavender)! I know it is kind of hard to pair it with the right clothes, but the style nowadays is anything goes. I first wore it to my daughter's Christmas program last December 18.

It was a comfy pair albeit a bit too big for me, just a tiny bit. The sides were not snug against my feet, but the good thing was that they don't easily slip off while I was walking, unlike others I have tried that made me have difficulty getting around. I didn't need to put in-soles just to make it the perfect size for me. If I get a size lower, it might be too tight. I just might be a half size, again. I was sure my feet got bigger when I gave birth to my first child. I was assuming it got even bigger after having my second child. I guess I was wrong.
Anyway, over all, I like it. Maybe next time I'll get one of Sole Sister's garterized designs. Also, I am eyeing one of their bags. My first pick is this:

Next choice is this:

I didn't want the purple one because I think it's too "matchy-matchy". Hehe! What do you think?

Is online shopping for me?

I suddenly realized that next month is September already. That means, Christmas is just around the corner. It isn't a wonder that people are starting to shop for gifts already. It is after all advisable to do Christmas shopping little by little so one wouldn't be so shocked at the expenses. I probably should get started on my list very soon. I also need to decide where I would shop. One option is online, where I could get my family and friends some custom t-shirts, custom jewelry or accessories and other novelty items. If one of my friends feels strongly about the great disaster that BP caused, I could get BP oil spill t-shirts for him or her. There sure are a lot of interesting items online. And, I could do shopping from the comfort of my home. I just have to wait for the items to arrive. I want to give it a try. The truth is, I have never tried shopping online. I have second thoughts about it since I couldn't see the actual merchandise. I am also not so sure about the sizing. What if it doesn't fit? I couldn't use it when I need it because I have to ship it back for an exchange. Do sellers even have this kind of service? What about the shipping charges? And the materials used? That means I have to really trust the seller. There's so much to consider. I will have to seek the advice of people who are expert online shoppers.

Personalized Trinkets

Last Christmas, with the gifts I have prepared for my close lady friends, I included something I made myself. My aim was to add a personal touch, and in hopes of giving them a token of my appreciation, something I hoped they could decorate their things with. I hope they liked them!

Season's Wishes

There is something magical about the Christmas season. It makes us giddy with childlike expectations, as if something wonderful is about to come our way. It gives us a glimmer of hope, that some positive change is waiting to happen, that wishes do come true. Maybe it is in view of this that we make wish lists and hope that some kind soul will grant our hearts' desires. Another reason for making this list is for a practical purpose, so we would get exactly what we need or want and that our friends and family would not have to waste time, effort and money on something we would rather donate next Christmas.

They say,"Giving is better than receiving." Christmas presents us with the opportunity to be selfless. It is one of my wishes that our country be healed. That means the removal of the corrupt officials in position, that our fellow countrymen will love the environment and showcase the love of God as a Christian nation. It makes me sad to see that many people (and children follow their examples) throw their garbage, even as small as a candy wrapper, on the streets. Like the whole country is their trash can. I also wish that everyone will have enough - enough work to fill their needs, enough time for their family and friends, enough faith in God to face a daunting tomorrow, knowing He will make all things work for our good. Of course, I would wish for my families' and my friends' great health, which is very important, so they may enjoy the delicious food especially this holiday season. And to be able to try the yummy food features of NomNom Club, too!

There are a couple of wishes I have for myself. First is that I won't be idle being a housewife and a stay-at-home mommy. I wish I could be making something I love and others will love, too, in the comfort of my home while having a small income on the side. That way, I will not be so much of a burden. Second, is that I will have a safe pregnancy and delivery of my second baby. And that he or she will be healthy and happy and would get along with his or her older sister very well.

These are my wishes this Christmas, and also my prayers to the Lord.

My "Nightmare" Before Christmas

Ah, next week is Christmas already. So fast. I am a bit anxious as I have not finished what I needed to do yet. *almost panic mode*

What can I say about this holiday season? Christmas brings out the best in people. They are kinder, more patient, more generous, they smile more often. I hope this lasts the whole year through, though. Christmas also brings out the worst in people. Counterfeit money are being produced, and more robbers prowl the streets. I fell victim to two of them a few days ago. It was a scary experience, thank God they just wanted my bag and they didn't stab me. I lost my cellular phone, home keys and a couple of ID cards. Good thing my ID cards don't have my residential address. On top of my Christmas tasks, I also have to replace those ID cards. *sigh*

I was afraid I'll dream of the scary robbery scene when I go to sleep. At that time, I was reading the Twilight Saga. I don't know why, but I dreamed of Jacob (but I haven't seen New Moon yet!) instead. So weird! I guess the book had me distracted, I'm thankful for that. But there are times I stare off into space and the images come to my mind's eyes. I had to shake them off. I am sure I won't be going to that place alone anymore.

Anyway, since my cellular phone "died", but not of a natural death, my dear hubby bought me a new one. I am so glad! This is my very first official Christmas gift.
