Keep Kids Safe Online with KidsEmail

When I was six years old, my daughter's age, I wasn't aware of another world - the online world. Now, my daughter is slowly immersing herself in that world via YouTube. She's even leaving comments on her favorite videos! She watches mostly My Little Pony toy reviews, other toy reviews, toy crafts and funny skits acted out using toys. She also wants to make a video of her own, but I have no idea how to edit a video.

Pretty soon, Ella's going to have friends and they will probably communicate through email when at home after school or during weekends. The worlds now - both real and online are more dangerous than before, so I will totally delay her making an account on Facebook. In my opinion, email is safer.

The good news is that there's KidsEmail.org, a fun & safe place to send and receive emails. Getting started is as easy as 1 - register a parent account, 2 - add children, 3 - set the safety settings. Setting the safety settings could be a bit intimidating at first, but when I realize it's for my child's protection, it's quite understandable. These settings include receiving emails only from the contact list, mailing a copy of incoming & outgoing messages to the parent, filter out bad words, remove images & links, etc. I could even control the type of attachments my daughter would receive. I love that KidsEmail allows everyone to try it for free without asking for a credit card number.

After setting up Ella's email, I asked her to choose a design as the background of her very own email. She chose the rainbow one, which was not pictured in the sample designs in the image below. The fairy princess design was one option she considered.
Other very cool features include:

  • a GPS tracker that gets the historical location where children have been, if they're using their KidsEmail in an Android device
  • the mail queue that intercepts emails which didn't pass the parents' safety rules, these emails can then be approved & sent, or denied & removed
  • time restrictions that set the time of the day and the days of the week when the kids can log in, they could also be grounded and a custom message could be displayed when they attempt to sign in
  • no ads displayed so children would not see anything inappropriate
  • a custom blacklist to block specific people
In this day and age, it's hard not to let children keep up with the technology, but it is more important to keep kids safe online. I am glad there are companies out there that are concerned with children's safety online.

Human Nature Acne Defense Solution Gel

The common misconception is that pimples break out during the awkward teenage stage. I am in my 30's and pimples still appear randomly. When that happens, it goes to show that my face is really oily or there's bacteria. It also gets annoying! It's painful and a woman in her midlife having zits is not a nice sight to behold.

I haven't yet found the perfect facial wash to prevent that. But, I did discover a product that makes zits more manageable.

The Human Nature Acne Defense is a wonder product that dries up acne breakouts in 3-5 days. I can feel my skin tightening and the pimples becoming smaller, then eventually drying up. I have to be religious in applying it, though, or else it will take longer than a week. The affected area tingles and then after a few hours, the pimple becomes smaller. Eventually, only a scab will be left. I suggest not removing this with your nail so that the skin will not scar. I made this mistake and I could still see a light and faded brown spot.

It's a solution gel that I dab (it should not be rubbed!) on my pimples after I clean my face. The product's consistency is viscous. It doesn't drip when applied on the face and yet it spreads easily on large areas. It comes in a 20g pump bottle which I find easy to use. I just have to figure out how to get the last drop when it's almost empty. The packaging is simple. There's cardboard with a round hole on the bottom and there's another on the top to hold the bottle in place to avoid it rolling around in the box since the size is perfect for traveling.

It smells like herbal medicine at first, but the scent is not overpowering. I don't notice it after a few seconds.

It is made with tea tree oil that has antibacterial properties. Human Nature is a brand that manufactures natural products that are free from harmful alcohol, SLS/SLES, synthetic fragrances, parabens, etc.

The skin absorbs 60% of topical products, that's why I am relieved that this product is 100% natural.

I would highly recommend you defend your face from pimples using Human Nature's Acne Defense.

What would I do with an extra $100?

Did you know that the little, seemingly negligible expenses that we shell out each month add up to much at the end of the year? If I buy an ice cream cone from the nearby convenience store for $.50 each week, I would be spending $24 a year!

Savings could also go the same way. It's much exciting, too! Take for example the razor that's being bought each month. If I become a member of the Dollar Shave Club (DSC), I would get shaving supplies, like their razors, for as low as $1 a month. I would have an extra $100 after a year. That's a lot!

So, what would I do with an extra $100?
  • Buy new jeans! With all the ice cream cones I had for a year, I'm going to need new pants that are a size or two bigger.
  • Go book shopping! I would love to get my hands on new titles! (even if I still have a long to-read list)
  • Get a gift for my husband. I don't have any idea what to buy, yet. Maybe more razors from DSC?
  • Or maybe I should just date my hubby at a restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet! Yum!
  • Go crazy with online shopping! Woohoo!
How about you? What would you do with an extra 100 bucks?

Keimav Bag Organizer from Lazada

I have been wanting to purchase a bag organizer for a while now and I was not sure what to get. When I saw this on Lazada, I decided to place my order. Although it is not a bag on its own like what I have seen on another site, it's fine since this one has more pockets.

These are what I like about this bag organizer:
  • Like I mentioned, it has more pockets for the little items that I had to turn my bag over just to find. I can see the said items because of the mesh material.
  • The material is lightweight and looks easy to clean.
  • There are zippered compartments to store cluttered papers like prescription, vouchers and receipts. I just need to remember that I placed them inside, hehe!

I know it doesn't match my red orange bag!

There are handles to easily pull it out of the bag.

There's an option to expand, if needed. Well, I needed to!

Before...

How the items are organized before placing them inside my bag. I have a pouch for my kikay kit and a need these days: a reusable bag!
If you want to get more details about this bag organizer and perhaps order one, here's the link to its Lazada product page: Keimav bag organizer

What do you think? Would you have bought this bag organizer?

Hey, Soul Sister!

Hey, Soul Sister by Train

I saw this video one time on a music channel. I liked it instantly. The catchy music was refreshing, sort of like reggae. The video itself was cute. I liked how some of the words of the song literally led the guy and the girl to each other. When the video was done, I found myself singing some parts of the chorus although I was not familiar with the lyrics. I think I had a case of LSS or Last Song Syndrome. But gladly, it was a nice song, and not some crappy, nonsensical one that got stuck to the "front lobe of my left-side brains." :-D

U.P. Town Center Day

It was Sunday and that means it's bike day. My hubby and I started riding our bikes in February almost every Sunday morning. We went to U.P. Diliman and joined the other bikers & the joggers. After maybe 3 times around the oval, I suggested that we bike to look for U.P. Town Center. Yikes! I was actually nervous about the idea of biking on an actual road. But, I really wanted to see the new place. So, off we went!

The street outside U.P. had lots of ups and downs that normally couldn't be felt when riding a car. But, on a bike, wow! I had to fight in maintaining my balance while pedaling upwards with all my might until we reached the end of the street. We then turned right on Katipunan Avenue and started down the road for a while before Rix stopped to ask for directions. Turned out, we were going in the opposite direction. Uh-oh! We had to cross the wide street with fast on-coming cars to make a U-turn. Twice!

Imagine my relief when we finally reached U.P. Town Center. Too bad J. Co wasn't open yet. We just rested and had breakfast at Family Mart. I felt quite tired and my knees were kind of like jelly. Rix understood my predicament, so after the food was finished, he biked back to U.P. to get the car. Yes, I waited for him there. Pathetic, I know!

I walked my folding bike around to explore the place. I waited for him afterwards so we could go home.

That afternoon, we were deciding where to go to get donuts and have dinner. We promised the kids we would take them out if they had their naps. And they did! Guess where we ended up?

At U.P. Town Center again! It was swarming with people when it was bare that morning. Nary a parking space was available so we opted for valet. Dinnertime found us at Dulcelin Gourmet. Of course, I wasn't able to take food pictures (frustrated food blogger)! Ella asked for dessert after the meal and cannot wait to head outside to buy.

Donuts for dessert! I fell in line for almost forever and was a bit sad to see that some flavors were out of stock. Is it always like that in J. Co? This was my first time to try this brand. We always buy KK.

On the way out, I felt tempted to buy a striped shirt from Cotton On. But, with three kids in tow? I pushed the idea out of my mind.

So, that's how our Sunday went. We visited U.P. Town Center twice in one day. Have you been there? What did you think of it?

Learning At Lynda

What is your learning style?

If you are visual or auditory learners, you would definitely benefit from watching videos about topics you are interested in. I was given a chance to try lynda.com for a few days as a perk from Klout and I found it very helpful. I watched videos about using the Illustrator and about an author making children's books. There are also videos about enhancing one's self to be a better person or be better at work. I like that I had the option to save the transcript of the videos so I could go over them again and take notes. I perused the app on my iPhone so I could watch videos wherever I am and especially when I was breastfeeding my little one. I like the idea of learning on-the-go.

There are over 2,000 courses that could cater to your learning needs so you could achieve your dreams. To get access to all courses, membership fees start at $25 per month. If you need to learn about, say, Photography, lynda.com has that topic, and with access to other courses, the price is affordable if you also want to learn about post-processing using Photoshop. At the end of the course, you will be given a certificate, too.

I believe that we always have room for improvement, and that is through learning constantly. Tweet: I believe that we always have room for improvement, and that is through learning constantly. -Cym

Shopping For Homecoming Dresses

Homecoming is one of those occasions that a woman would dress in something classy yet makes a statement. It is where old friendships rekindle and new connections are made. In view of this, it would be a good idea that the ensemble she chooses will reflect her personality or represent her present career. Of course, she would need to take into consideration her body shape so she could wear something that would enhance her great features.

For example, a business woman might choose this outfit when browsing catalogs of homecoming dresses 2013.

I would imagine a nature enthusiast donning this fresh-looking light green dress.

A lady with a girly or feminine personality might choose this dainty and sweet-looking ensemble.

Artists are quirky characters with a need for self-expression, and I think they would stand out in a number like this one.

As healthcare professionals or doctors who are always in scrubs or white coats, my opinion is that they would want an outfit that pops of color, yet would still look professional with a classic silhouette.

Taking into consideration my wide hips, I would choose a dress with an A-line skirt. And because I have a chubby figure, I want my homecoming dress for my university organization's 50th anniversary homecoming party to be forgiving. As a housewife, I would choose something a little simple but still unique and flattering. And of course, it should be age-appropriate and not look like a prom dress.

This daffodil colored homecoming dress is on top of my list with its pleated charmeuse as an accent in itself.

I love how forgiving this next dress could be. This red chiffon homecoming dress accentuates the shoulders and cleavage, if any. The empire cut might be a bit tricky to pull off since it could make me look pregnant. I would prefer this in another color, though.

My last choice is a black V-neck homecoming dress with beading. The neckline is a tad too deep for me. I just like how black is slimming, and the beads make the dress look elegant. This could make a great little black dress (LBD).

So, what do you think of my choices for a homecoming party? How about you? What kind of dress would you wear to a homecoming?

Stylish Maternity Dresses

The last time I was pregnant, I sort of promised myself I would take me shopping for some pretty spring maternity dresses I saw at boutiques in the mall. That didn't quite happen as I was caught up with life. Plus, I couldn't bear to buy new dresses I would wear for just a few months. Also, I have ordinary clothes that I could use while sporting a big belly. I would like to think that only my belly got big, and not my whole body. My mom got me a couple of maternity wear from China that I got to wear for less than 10 times.

And then, I suddenly wanted an outdoor maternity shoot before my scheduled C-section. I realized that I had no flowery maternity dress. I searched my closet and found a summer dress I bought not too long ago. Praying that it will fit, I slipped on the dress. And...
ta-da! the result!
If I had planned earlier that I would have my photos taken before I gave birth, I would have chosen dresses like these from www.momobaby.com:

It's so great that stylish maternity dresses are available already. They would certainly enhance a pregnant woman's already blooming countenance.

What is better is that after giving birth, these dresses could still be utilized and would look flattering on any body shape. And, even better is when they are breastfeeding-friendly!

I also love these ones below:

Balcony, A Poem

Balcony
There is a place in my house before
It is located on the second floor
Sliding glass doors open to it
At night with warm lighting it is lit
It needs no fan to ventilate
It was like I was at heaven's gate
I valued my time spent here
Being alone with no one to hear
A little roof and then the sky
They have heard and seen me cry
I would take my place on the ledge
Hand on grills for on the edge
I felt tingles down my body
Afraid to fall and break unevenly
Journal open and pen poised
Thoughts were out but not voiced
My face upwards and catching the wind
A lovely place to clear the mind
Ceramic, pebbles, and tiles
Here to welcome guests with smiles
Looking down at the gate that's red
Here, countless books I have read
A place of connection to the Lord
Lifting up prayers with my heart's words
I would look over to the empty lot
Across walls, and built upon it's not
I would wonder if snakes there roam
I hoped they wouldn't enter our home
Here, there were dreams that were formed
And shattered after it had stormed
As flood waters rushed in everywhere
That was the view from up there
Here, our wet and cold dog stayed
On the second floor we waited and prayed
But, as soon as the sun shone through
I rushed here to see if the streets dried, too
It held a hope that the nightmare was over
Like how God offers strength forever

a little roof and then the sky

When I think back upon this part of my parents' home, I realized that it was kind of my sanctuary. I went there when I felt sad. I also went there to be inspired to write more poems, apart from drawing inspiration from the Bible. I have always loved composing poetry. I went there whenever I wanted to connect with God, to look at the clouds and to talk with Him. About the flood waters, my parents' place would be quite flooded whenever it would rain for days. The whole first floor was submerged in water during the typhoon Ondoy. Over there, it was great to be on the balcony because the house was situated far from the avenue where cars pass by. But here, I couldn't stay very long on the balcony because of the pollution from the public utility jeeps, the tricycles and the private cars that always pass through the street outside our home. The balcony here is very "public" as many passers-by walk along the street thus, I wouldn't dare cry!

LED light bulbs are helpful to moms, too!

Do you plan to use LED light bulbs? Do you have LED light bulbs as replacement light bulbs? These are the advantages of LED light bulbs, according to my husband, Rix:
  • Environment-friendly since they don't heat up easily
  • Takes a long time for them to be busted, compared with a CFL
  • Energy-efficient since just a few amperes are consumed
  • The luminosity of LED light bulbs is higher than the usual CFL
Of course, the cost of LED lights are still high since they are not the "mainstream" lights, and the technology used is still fairly new.

You may be wondering why I said that they are helpful to moms.

Since LED lights do not have filaments that heat up, it is okay to keep them turned on for longer periods of time. We use LED bulbs for the lights on the perimeter outside our house in the evening and all throughout the night. This is for safety purposes.

Since my daughter is scared of the dark, she would wake me up or her dad (if her little sister is still breastfeeding while sleeping), just to turn on the light in the bathroom. Sometimes, daddy Rix would be in a bad mood and get angry at her for waking him from his slumber. We have tried the censor light thingy from a hardware store, but I guess the light was too small and it's colored blue, Elle was convinced it's still too dark. The solution is that, as suggested, we decided to keep the light in the bathroom turned on until dawn or until one o-clock in the morning. And so, we changed the CFL's in the bathroom to LED light bulbs. Yay! Problem solved!

Now, I just have to remember to keep it on for her. :-)

The Camera Diary at The Breastfeeding Club's Meeting

Last December 2, a handful of eager parents, some with their precious bundles, trooped to Medela House for The Breastfeeding Club’s final meeting for the year 2012.

The parents had their fill of helpful knowledge about breastfeeding from Ms. Abbie Venida-Yabot, Leader of La Leche League Manila, especially now that the Christmas holiday is fast approaching. Then they connected with each other and with their inner maternal and paternal sparks with the help of Ms. Anna Escay-Cortez, Chief Spark of My Masterpiece Movement. The attendees were ready to face the challenges of parenting with renewed confidence.

What better way to treat these parents who were there than to bring home a wonderful souvenir portrait? The Breastfeeding Club partnered with The Camera Diary to provide the pictorial services complete with an elegant studio-type set-up delivering quality photos as a keepsake. The Camera Diary offered their top-notch expertise in portraiture with on-the-spot editing of pictures so they’d be perfect to frame and display. This is a lovely way to capture the smiles of moms, dads and even children who were happy to discover more ways to love their family and were satisfied with their learning from the event.

Below are a couple of the souvenir photos taken at the said event. The Camera Diary did a studio-type photobooth for the speakers and the participants.

Planning My Wardrobe

Now that I am more, ahem, mature, I think I need to update my look. I am not talking about something like a facelift montreal as it is way out of budget and really not part of my plans. I am referring to a wardrobe makeover. I still have so many pre-pregnancy tops and bottoms that I don't think would look good on me and my mummy tummy. I don't even know and maybe I don't want to find out what size of jeans would fit me these days. What I need are tops that have forgiving shapes and silhouettes. For the bottoms, I prefer to wear skirts or shorts, although I have only one or two of each, that would look presentable. I'm thinking of adding more. I also want a little black dress and a little white dress, which they say should be staples in a woman's closet. Other kinds of dresses are also part of my list.

Recently, I purchased this Plains and Prints Mykonos dress from ZALORA.

I love that it comes with a belt that I could use with other dresses or loose tops. I also love that there's an inside dress or slip that I could use with other sheer dresses. I cannot wait to wear it to a party or maybe to my cousins' wedding, unless I would need to wear a gown.

At the recent bazaar held at Damar Village, I found two tops that I think were cool finds from the Mango brand. The dress on the lower left was chosen by my hubby. They also have other popular brands like Guess, Mossimo, Vans, Salsa and Miss Sixty. There's going to be a repeat next year so do watch out for it, especially if you often pass by the area.

What I need to do next is to sell or donate the ones that I have not worn within one or two years. I also plan to sort the baby clothes because I think our house is bursting at the seams with stuff. This is so we could have more space for new things, right? :-)

Polished Concrete For The Home

Did you ever think of using polished concrete in your house? The thought never crossed my mind. Now that I saw this site called forrestconcrete.com, it seems like a good idea to use it for the home. When a person says polished concrete, what comes to my mind is the color grey, that it is unfinished and unsightly. I also wouldn't think that it could be used in a residential setting. I think I am too far out of the loop of interior design trends. For our kitchen countertop, our contractor used 24" x 24" granite tiles six years ago. Now, the surfaces have cracks here and there, the sides that frame the bottom cabinets are almost gone because they fell off. It's sad-looking, actually. I might consider the option of having polished concrete, especially if our countertop could look something like this:

photo from forrestconcrete.com
It's nice, right? It looks like a granite countertop, and looks quite seamless. I didn't know polished concrete could take on that kind of look. I think I'll suggest this to my husband.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if my dream house looks like this? Stamped concrete was used on the driveway. I'd really love to have lawns. The polished concrete could also used for the countertop of my dream Master bathroom as I have mentioned in my previous post about visiting a new home.

Forrestconcrete.com's motto holds very true:

"The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of a low bid is forgotten"
Do you agree?

Weekend Fun Must-haves!

Who doesn't love the weekends? It's when we could take a break from work and enjoy more of the lovely blessings we have in our lives. For some, it is enjoying the fruits of their labor by going shopping or dining out, with friends or family or without. For some, it is a relaxing time to go on a pampering spree or on a road trip to Tagaytay to escape the city heat. For me and my hubby, it is spending quality time with our children. If we are not home playing with them, we are out for lunch or dinner at a kid-friendly restaurant or we are getting fresh air at some grassy, tree-filled place near the city. We would also do a fun photo-shoot like this:

You and your family could have your photo taken like this! Or in any theme you fancy! Just drop me a message here or email me at cymplified[at]gmail[dot]com.

So, when we go have some family fun like this, I would need a really good weekender bag where the children's things could also fit. I believe that a mom's bag cannot have too many pockets and dividers. I'd love a roomy bag that's multi-functional with lots of compartments, like these ones from ZALORA:
A practical dark purple color
https://www.zalora.com.ph/CARRY-ALL-WEEKENDER-33380.html
A pretty pink color
https://www.zalora.com.ph/CARRY-ALL-WEEKENDER-33382.html
What shall I put inside the bag? As a breastfeeding mom carrying/wearing my baby and running after my small children, water is an important  item in the bag. This glass bottle with silicone sleeve I found in ZALORA makes a statement.

Looks clean and pure!
https://www.zalora.com.ph/Lifefactory-22-oz-glass-bottle-w%2F-sleeve%2F-pearl-white-59072.html
I get super sweaty so I would need a small towel like this one from ZALORA aside from a handkerchief that I always have in my pocket.

I love purple!
https://www.zalora.com.ph/MICROFIBER-YOGA-HAND-TOWEL-64167.html
And a change of shirt (or dress), too! Of course, I want something comfortable, and has breastfeeding access.

I like the overlap detail!
https://www.zalora.com.ph/KANDICE-TUNIC%2FHOODIE-63009.html
A dress with buttons in front
https://www.zalora.com.ph/KYLEE-DRESS-67412.html
Shop at ZALORA and get 5% off when you use this voucher code CymCazza123G upon checkout.

I wonder what our next photo-shoot theme will be? It's fun and a great family bonding moment!

My Melody Fair, a birthday party!

After a couple of few months of planning, my third baby's 1st birthday party is done at last!

CaylaPartyCollage

I liked how Cherry Lim of Style Me Pretty interpreted the concept and transformed Oasis into a festive pink tent. I cannot get over how cute the candy buffet looked, even though I didn't have a single sweet treat that day because my throat hurt so much. Thank God He kept me well enough for Cayla's birthday party. I thought I would be absent! Haha!

Here is the little angel whose first year of life we were celebrating:

Dedicated to the Lord

Aside from having the works of a kiddie party like games, prizes and loot bags, we also have booths sourced from Style Me Pretty like:
Stickers Galore
DIY Cupcake
Nachos
Fried balls, and
Ice Scramble

Of course, we had a host to facilitate the games, and also entertainment from Pink Heaven like:
Balloon Twisting, and
Dog Show

Then our caterer was Tjioe, which received many compliments from the adults.

My eldest said she enjoyed the party and I'm glad!

Cayla's first birthday also marks a milestone in my breastfeeding journey. By God's grace, I have been exclusively nursing her for a year and counting when I thought I wouldn't last a week. That's another cause for celebration!

I really thank God for bestowing on us three wonderful blessings and everything that we need.

Family Activities Planning

When my third child turns 4 or 5, there are a few activities that I want to do with my children. There are some places that I want to go with all of them. I want to experience and learn new things with them.

  1. I would like for us to visit museums like Museo Pambata and Mind Museum.
  2. I long to watch live musicals and theatrical productions like the recently shown Sound of Music.
  3. I couldn't wait to get my hands on cirque du soleil tickets for a one-of-kind experience. And concert tickets like roger waters tickets and radiohead tickets for when they are teenagers, if they will be into that sort of thing.
  4. Someday, we would be able to experience Disneyland and Disneyworld. It was unforgettable for me when I went to Orlando and L.A. many, many years ago. I'd love for my kids to enjoy that, too.
  5. Playing sports like badminton or biking with them is also part of the plan. It would feel great to be getting fit as a family, right?

Lemon for Moms!

When it comes to handling our family's finances, moms need all the help we can get. Agree? Do you really know what you spend your money on? I want the answer to that question.

Overwhelmed by receipts? If you are like me whose wallet was getting fat, not with cash (I hope it was!), but with receipts and charge slips, then using Lemon would be a sigh of relief.

Is it just me or are you also amazed at how iPhone applications could turn the camera into a scanner? Wow, right? So when I used Lemon to scan receipts so I'll have a digital copy of them, I was also in awe how the scanner could read the printed words and amount then type them out. I even tried it on a handwritten one and it worked.

And did you know that one can now digitize the debit and credit cards, the loyalty and ID cards, even coupons and daily deals using Lemon? So, if I lost my wallet (God forbid!), I have a back-up copy of my cards thus, when I call the credit card company to report my lost card, I know the card info to tell them. Smart, isn't it?
