Dessert at Ice Flower

The Interior of Ice Flower, SM North

The bare concrete look of the floor and walls contrasts sharply with the colorful tables and chairs. The area was big, that four children played hide-and-seek, provided they did not disturb the other customers. I think the mixed furniture style of the place projected an image of fun and playfulness.

Supposed to be, a small glass-enclosed L-shaped section fronting the restaurant gave people a cool treat with a snow-making machine. Unfortunately, that day, it was not working. :-(

What We Ordered At Ice Flower

Below were the two flavors of Bingsoo the kids chose. Blueberry with cheese and choco Oreo something, with cheese too, since you can get additional cheese for an additional cost. I think. The cheese was delicious. It would not seem to go well with dessert, but it does! For cheese nonlovers though, like my son, it would be better if someone else consumed the cheese.

The ice was so soft that I think they were made from frozen creamy milk. There’s also extra milk that you can pour over the finely shaved milk ice.

We had bowls of dairy overloaded dessert - milky ice, cheese and for the choco Oreo something, a scoop of ice cream. Definitely not for the lactose intolerant!

Have you tried Bingsoo or Bingsu? Which one is the correct term? What do you think of it?

Summer So Far

At the beginning of summer, during Holy Week to be exact, my family of five trooped to Jeju Island with extended family and friends. After preparation for a much colder weather, we were set to enjoy our first international travel together. We were part of a group tour and visited lots of places, including the very pink Hello Kitty Island.

And then, we enrolled the three kids in swimming school. For ten days I prepared their things, we waited for their scheduled time, I hanged out for an hour watching them through clear glass, they showered after, we went home and they had snacks. Swimming makes them hungry.

My birthday also rolled around during this time. I celebrated it with my side of the family with a filling dinner, and this cake...

So, that's our summer so far. These days, we just stay at home, with me cleaning up some clutter.

I hope we could go to on a local trip soon, one that is accessible from Manila. Do you have any suggestion?

Summer Vacation Adventure Time Soon

Oh my gosh! How time flies! My eldest child Elle's summer vacation officially starts. She had her moving up and recognition day last Saturday. Her class performed the song I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing. I'm happy to report that she garnered a bronze medal. :-)

So now we're looking for an art class for her as that aligns with her interest. I also like for her to learn how to swim for that is important, but I have to practice driving first. Frankly, my heart beats so fast when cars move so close to ours.

But, before that, we have a trip to prepare for. A week to go and I'm still packing. I have to make sure I don't leave anything important. Some things that are important yet are not needed for the trip should to be kept in a fireproof safe. I guess it would be ideal if the safe is one of the biometric safes available, so that the security would be tight.

I wonder how frequent travelers do it. They must already have a cheat sheet or something on what kind of luggage is best, what needs to be checked in & what should be hand-carried, what clothes are suitable for certain countries, etc. I'm getting dizzy with all these details.

travel-themed box design, cute right?
I'm looking forward to the trip, but of course, I will surely miss the two little ones. It will be my first time to travel out of the country ever since I got married, the trip will be crossed off my life (bucket) list. It will be Elle's first time to ride in an airplane.

Hopefully, I could make it educational for her. And hopefully, I could be done with the packing already!

Weekday at Megamall

One weekday found our little family at Megamall because my hubby Rix needed to take care of something. There was an LTO there so I also renewed my driver's license. When he separated himself from us after lunch, my kids plus a yaya and I had time to do some kiddie stuff. My 4-year-old rode the carousel twice.

hooray for carousels!
I spied the LEGO room inside Toy Kingdom with just a few kids playing, so I pushed my son who was in the stroller and inquired if there's an entrance fee. There was none, yay!

While Elle was busy playing with the yaya looking on, while Caleb was sleeping in the stroller, I wheeled him out to a nearby yogurt place and had this:

sneaky mommy!
Going to a busy mall like Megamall on a weekday was great because there were fewer people about even at an early hour. Recently, we tend to avoid the malls on weekends. Since we have very small kids, we don't like super crowded places. Hope we could repeat this some time.

A Doze of Sun, Sand and Sea

What is summer in the Philippines without a visit to one of its beaches?
My hubby, my daughter and I had our first summer swimming (dipping, actually) at Club Punta Fuego in Batangas last Black Friday until Easter Sunday. It really wasn't my idea of cooling down, I even got sun-burned! But it was fun nonetheless. Little Elle knows how to use a float ring now, she even knows that to go in a direction she desires, she needs to paddle her hands and kick her legs. Thanks to my mom for giving her one. Rix and I bought her a little bucket with sand shovels, a sand scraper and two animal molds. She used them to play, while sitting on the sandy shore, with the waves lightly crashing on her outspread legs. We also got to stay at the kiddie swimming pools where she never let go of her float ring. I think Elle enjoyed both the beach and the pools.
Below are some pictures I took, they are just few for most of the time I was accompanying Elle in the water.

The sea water in both beaches was clean unlike that of Subic where we went last time. The beach we dipped in the first day had coarser sand with more rocks, corals and shells. It was also more crowded. The second one, the one farther from where we stayed had finer and purer sand.

I wonder where our next swimming location will be?

Reunion With Nature

For two Sundays this month, my hubby Rix, my daughter Elle and I have gone to the University of the Philippines (U.P.) to get some fresh air and some exercise early in the morning. Rix went biking with his friends while I take leisurely walks with Elle. Many people were there to either jog or cycle. It was nice to get in touch with nature after time spent breathing in the air pollution and suffering the noise pollution of living in the city. Below are some photos I took using my cellphone camera of my beloved Alma Mater.

In view of our recent activity, I stumbled upon  this site, My Four Monkeys with a very, very lovely Zigo Leader X2 giveaway that will be super useful for our Sunday activity. I could ride the bike, so it's exercise for me, and my little Elle could enjoy nature's scenery sitting in the child carrier in front. It's a wonderful product for the family and I am amazed by the concept of it. It also encourages its users to  have fun while going "green".

From Baguio With Yumminess

Baguio is one of the places here in the Philippines that I wish to visit again very soon. The first and last time that I had the chance to go there was when I was around 6 years old, I think, and I can't even remember most of it! My two elder brothers went there recently and I was the recipient of some yummy pasalubong (coming back present from the particular place visited). I also asked one of them to buy me a walis tambo (broom), which costs around 75 Pesos. I hope next time, I will be the one bringing these back.

Fresh strawberries! Some of them I blended with bananas, milk and ice. Yum!

Experiencing Manila Ocean Park

It was a hot Sunday afternoon when we, my family and I plus two of our close friends and their younger brother, went to Manila Ocean Park. We paid the 400 pesos entrance fee for adults, 350 pesos for Elle as she's over 2 feet tall. There were many, many aquariums showcasing different species of fishes and other marine life here in the country. There were even crocodiles lounging about in their enclosed area. There were dimly lit areas for sea creatures that are sensitive to light, so no flash photography was allowed. A dimly lit lobby marked the end of the dark exhibit area and signaled the start of the much featured underwater tunnel. The lobby had cute square plastic ottomans with changing colored lights inside. Elle loved going back to them and she would begin arranging them, too bad most of them were occupied by other people. The tunnel goes under filtered Manila Bay water with lots of fish species and stingrays. I thought the tunnel was long, but it seemed not the case. The end had an aquarium where we viewed the sharks. There was also an area for kids with tables and chairs, shelf with books, a puppet show stage and educational activity kiosks.

Then up we went to the uppermost level where there was a promotional stand, a food and beverage area, a fish spa, a boat ride and a restaurant. We tried the fish spa where we removed our footwear, dipped our feet in a shallow square pool with tiny fishes that nibble at the feet's dead skin. It seemed that I cannot really get comfortable with the feeling, I always cringe when they start gnawing at my feet. I am afraid to get hurt, I suppose, because they even nibble at areas of my feet without callouses. There was another pool filled with larger fishes. I did not dare to try it, though!

 Please pardon my elephant-like ankles

Next, we went on a boat ride. The boat had a transparent glass flooring so we could view the marine scene beneath us. This was above the underwater tunnel, inside a small room so it was just a short ride. The boat man talked about the park, gave information and trivia. According to him, in the next few months, there will be a sea lion attraction to watch out for. They were building the stadium for that when we visited.

When we were done, I was famished and we decided to look for a place to eat nearby. We passed by a restaurant called Makansutra Asian Food Village. Seats surrounded a central area where we can see the cooking being done. It was decided that we take our dinner here. Their specialties are mostly Singaporean cuisine. There were unusual drinks that we have decided to try. We could see the bay from the restaurant and as the Pyromusical was still on-going then, we got to witness some of the fireworks on display across the water.

Photo taken by Elle - a bowl of thick soup (like Shark's Fin soup), some noodles and a glass of Chocolate Dinosaur (tastes like Ovaltine/Milo plus the powder on top)

With full tummies plus some takeout, we headed to the parking lot then drove home. It was a very interesting experience. I hope we could go to zoos and museums next time.

Spot the color: Red

For Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year:

We had tocino (sweetened cured pork meat) for breakfast in the morning.

Here's a bouquet of red roses for me. They're not from my hubby Rix, though.

Some boxes of tikoy or nian gao that is very often seen in households as the Lunar New Year arrives.

We had lunch at S&R and bought a few grocery items. Then we went home to rest for a few hours, then headed out again at around 5 in the afternoon.

My family and I braved the traffic jam and went to the grounds of SM Mall Of Asia. I don't know how long we stayed in the car, I'm glad little Elle didn't get cranky.

We passed by this building where events are held. I think there was a wedding reception going on there.

The reason why the traffic was horrible in the area was because it's the first day of the 1st Philippine International Pyromusical Competition. Rix and I wanted to watch some lovely fireworks with Elle. From afar, that is, as we didn't have time to purchase the tickets. After the opening show, we decided to have dinner, and then go home. On the way out it was still very slow, there were so many cars on the road. We got to Wai Ying, a simple Chinese dining place in Manila, quite late and we were already sleepy.

It was a great day, minus the traffic jam, but I think we all enjoyed it. And there was no rain, too! Thank God for a lovely day.

Ice Cream Evening

One Sunday evening, after having dinner at Zensho (where you order as much Japanese food as you possibly can devour), I suggested to my hubby Rix that we have dessert here. I have always wanted to have ice cream here. There were no customers around, which is good because I don't like crowded dining places. But is also bad because it could mean that this place isn't worth visiting at all. The air conditioning was not very cooling. Maybe they're saving electricity and will have turned it on when customers arrive.

I ordered this: a banana split. I chose the double chocolate, the strawberry and the raspberry flavored ice creams for it. As you can see, the raspberry ice cream was starting to melt already. It had marshmallows, candy sprinkles and chocolate syrup. There was no cherry, though. Rix had the cappuccino flavored ice cream scoop and we ordered the strawberry ice cream scoop for Elle. The strawberry had large strawberry bits, which I find great. The total of our bill amounted to just 200 pesos, which surprised us at how inexpensive this Italian ice cream place was.

Here is Elle enjoying her first few spoonfuls of ice cream. She then went off to explore this different surrounding. In the end, I was the one who finished it.  *sigh*

I really enjoy evenings like these...

Inside My Bag Of Beans

Actually, there were 3 slices of this Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I've been meaning to visit this place for I don't know how long and last weekend, my hubby Rix indulged me. There were already several cars parked outside near the road when we got there. I was a bit worried that there'll be no more tables left for us as I thought the coffee shop was small. Small was the bakeshop that we first entered, I was craning my neck to see if there was a hallway at the back leading to where the tables were located, and saw none. We went back out and saw stairs leading down, so followed it we did. The steps were uneven and plants were growing on both sides, reaching out to coffee and bread lovers arriving at their haven. We were greeted by an aviary with several tweeting lovebirds inside. We had to choose whether we'd like to be seated at tables with umbrellas, at long wooden tables with matching wooden benches, at chairs and tables under a thatched roof, at a low molded iron outdoor tables with chairs, at wooden chairs and tables on a raised area surrounded by flowering plants near another set of stairs or at Tiffany-like chairs with cushion seats and glass-topped tables.

Covered seating area

We opted for the last one but then we settled for the long wooden table with benches due to people smoking at the next table. While we consumed the sandwich and fries, and sipped our iced coffees, we noticed that there was a path leading to a door that is ajar which perhaps opens to a covered seating area we thought that we should have taken. Oh, well!

Take a peek

The downside of this cafe in a garden is the presence of large mosquitos. I am glad I brought an insect repelling lotion for Elle. My little angel looked happy with the place, seeing the fountains and those birds.

Btw, this is her new hairstyle care of Mommy, her first haircut ever took place last month

A popular place for buying baked goodies, Rowena's, was packed with customers. We wished to buy more of their Ube (purple yam) tarts, but only a box was left. Their counter was set in the middle and shelves full of tarts and sweets lined the longest wall to the left. At the back was a coffee shop, serving coffee, cakes and of course, an assortment of their specialty - tarts, which were chilled.

Hello there my sweet tart!

Daddies' Day Out

Caramel Cake from Estrel's
There was a Mother's Day last May, then it's only fair to have a Father's Day this June. A long time ago, daddies exist just to play with the kids. The type of play that involves lots of physical activities. The job of caring for the children was left to the mommies. The daddies of today are more different; they know how to bathe newborns, they are present when the kids are sick, they put the children to bed at times. At least, that's what I observed with my hubby and some other daddies whose stories I was shared with. I know that I am lucky, and Elle's even luckier to have a nurturing daddy like Rix.
To celebrate this day, my family along with my parents, my sister-in-law and nephew went to California Pizza Kitchen at Greenhills Theater Mall for lunch. We had frozen yogurt with fruit toppings afterwards while my nephew played a bit of arcade. Rix let Elle rode a mini carousel and I could tell she enjoyed it very much. Good thing she didn't cry for more when the 4 minutes were up. After that, we brought my parents, sister-in-law and my nephew home where we ate the caramel cake I bought, and consumed avocado shake. Yum! The calories!
Soon, very soon, it will be Mother's Day again. Hahaha!

Green Beach Hopes

Together with Rix's friends and their families, we went to a beach in Subic. I returned with rashes on my forearms. It's sad to know that the sea water there was unclean. And there weren't any trash cans near the hut where we rested and grilled barbecue in between dipping and building sand mountains. I am no super environmentalist, but I feel real guilty leaving trash on the floor or throwing it out the car window. Too bad many people are not conscientious of polluting their own city or town. There are also place owners who do not provide the proper waste disposal equipments. And also the law enforcers are not strict in implementing the ordinances on waste management. The same goes for vandalism, stealing of public signage and burning of trash just about anywhere, just to name a few. The view is nice and the place inviting, only if it was maintained properly.

Palm Sunday Trip

At last, I got to ride the cable car during my 3rd visit to Tagaytay Highlands. Behind us in the photo were the mountain, trees and log cabins (I think). We went with Rix - my hubby and my mom. The four of us tagged along with my brother who had rented a log cabin for an overnight stay with his wife's siblings and their families. We were there for a day tour.

First, we drove to Laguna where we met up with my sister-in-law's siblings at Jollibee. After they arrived, we had lunch at Leslie's Restaurant, which has a great view of Taal Volcano. Too bad I didn't have a photo of that. Then after they checked in, we stopped by the log cabin, which looked pretty much the same as the last time we rented it. We got the guest card so Rix, Elhaym, my mom and I headed for the swimming pool. Elhaym was really excited and kept saying "Hweeming". I put sunblock on her and forgot to rub some on myself! LOL. I guess I was excited, too. We descended the small flight of stairs to the cold pool. Elhaym did not seem to mind and wasted no time splashing the water. Plenty of people were taking a dip, too, most of them with kids, but it was not overcrowded, thank God. After about an hour of playing with water and watching Elhaym enjoy, we showered then took a few pictures on the bridge over the pool before we headed to the horseback riding area. Nope, we didn't get to ride a horse, but at least Elhaym got to see a real, live, breathing horse. I wanted to take her to the zoo when she's a bigger, because she likes animals.

Elhaym, my mom and I fell in line for the cable car ride. We almost backed out because my mom thought it would take too long. Well, it kinda did. Elhaym was getting impatient. Obviously, we didn't and we even got to be included in the last trip. Whew! It was a spine-tingling ride for me as we were already super high above the mountains and I was a bit scared to look down at the trees below. What I did was I pointed out the sky, the trees, the mountains, the houses, and the golf course to Elhaym. A blast of cool air welcomed us when the doors opened, as it was already late in the afternoon. We arrived at the Country Club where Rix was waiting for us. We again drove to the log cabin to retrieve the leftovers from lunch and the doggie bag for Mocha, the mongrel that looks like a Pomeranian.

We were heading to Manila at around 6 in the evening. Elhaym seemed pooped out as she slept the whole way to Aristocrat where we had dinner. I could hardly keep myself awake, too. We then brought my mom home where dad was waiting. We stayed for less than 5 minutes then home we went. Elhaym slept again, cried a bit while I changed her into a fresh diaper and PJ's, then drifted to Dreamland again. I also did after I prepared for bed.

That's our first swimming trip for the summer. I hope we get to swim again soon.

A Time To Share And Enjoy

Our friend was spending her days alone in the unit she shares with her hubby. Her hubby sailed out to sea again, and it shall be months before he comes back. I was glad to see her coping, to see her independently preparing her own meals and cleaning the house. My own hubby went out of town for two days and I missed him so much already.

I, together with two other close friends went to visit her last Saturday. We took a walk around the park/market in front of their building, cooked Spaghetti together at her home, chatted about so many things that are going on in our lives, and watched their wedding video. One went home early and the rest of us just hanged out at Seattle's Best, continued chatting, took more pictures and sipped coffee, of course!

Basically, we had a really great time, in my opinion. I enjoy hanging out with my gal pals.

By February next year, I will again be a bridesmaid for another friend who's getting married soon. It's quite exciting. And it seems my daughter will be her little flower girl.

I am happy to see my friends finally poised to spend the rest of their lives with the guys that they love.

All Aboard!

We emerged from the ship hot, sweating and thirsty. I don't know if I would like to go back or not. I bought a souvenir ID lace, a Christian book and a Care Bear book for my daughter. I didn't want to have difficulty navigating through people and bumping with them anymore just to look for nice books. They even ran out of Photography books which were aligned with my hubby's interest. The prices were reasonable, though.

The staircases of the ship were not the usual rise and run. It's like a diagonal plank with evenly spaced half tube protrusions. I guess you'd know if you've been on one. It was harder going down. Whew! The crew on board were mostly foreigners. Before one buys a ticket priced at Php10, there were two mime performers there for entertainment.

It was a couple of hours after lunch when we arrived. The sun was shining brightly so I had Elhaym wear a cap and a pair of sunglasses. It's good that I brought a folding umbrella to shield us from intense sunlight as we queued a good long way from the ship. From the end of the line, we could see so many silhouettes of people milling on the deck. We almost backed out.

The ship's name is MV Doulos. It is docked on Manila shores until the end of March.

Family, SHMILY

For some, Sunday is a family day. And, yes, we spent this day together. Too bad we didn't catch the service at our church because we woke up late due to being tired from our trip to Pangasinan where we visited my hubby's relatives. We also went there for his Grandma's death month-sary prayer session. His mother's family is Catholic.

First, we took lunch with my side of the family. We had Chinese fresh lumpia, sweet & sour pork, fish fillet with broccoli, shrimp with veggies and fresh strawberries for dessert. After they played with my daughter and after she turned their house upside down, we left for my college Alma Mater - University of the Philippines. Rix and I planned to take Elhaym there for fresh air and some exercise. It's like a park, it is open and requires no entrance charge. We found parking outside one of the nearby college buildings and then we walked to the Sunken Garden where lots of people were gathered - playing soccer, playing football, having a meeting, seated under the large trees, having a picnic. While we sat on the grass, we enjoyed ice cream as Elhaym walked around. I really enjoy these moments with my very own family. I feel the coziness of love inside.

This is the Grandstand in the Sunken Garden where bands play during the annual fair or meetings are held. The grass grows in tufts, I guess it's because of the foot traffic, plus soccer practices and games are played here.

Suddenly, drops of rain were falling on us. Fortunately, we already finished our ice cream cones. So we walked across the area toward the college building where we parked. When we reached the other side, the sun immediately shone intensely. Mother Nature is sort of fickle-minded today. Basking in a bit of afternoon sun, Rix and I pretended to run after Elhaym. She gave little squeals of delight and smiled at us while she bounced away from our grasps. Then, we were homeward bound.

Rix and I went for a body massage at Hi-Life, and a cup of Coffee Jelly Frap from Starbucks after we left Elhaym with the yaya, for a little us time.

The day was spent simply, but I couldn't ask for more.

Wondering what SHMILY stands for? I got it from a story of love where a couple always writes the acronym all over the house using just about anything - See How Much I Love You.

My Holiday Happenings

A snowman-shaped brownie just for me!

I haven't been posting any entry for the longest time. Sorry... It's just that I've been feeling tired lately from work. The number of transactions at the bank were few but the volumes were huge. Although we were busy, we were able to deliver our best effort and it's heart-warming to know that some clients really, genuinely appreciated our service. We were given some gifts like calendars, shirts, bags and umbrellas. They sent over food like tofu with mushroom and chicken, pizza pies, cakes, noodles, brownies, ice cream, etc. I think I gained several pounds and inches over a few days. And it was not Christmas yet!

It is Christmas Day!
Breakfast of ham and more ham,
Prepared by hubby.

Remembering them,
Loved ones that had gone away,
Reminiscing times.

Dinner with fam'ly
There at Fort Bonifacio,
Had nice walks and nice talks.

We also opened Christmas gifts, most are for Elhaym. It's obvious that she favors teddy bears over dolls.

Booted!

The Gathering (Of friends and of trees)

The Monday following Irish's wedding was a special non-working holiday. While she was at her honeymoon in Macau, the rest of the gang, Rix and I met up at Don Henrico's for a nice pizza-pasta-fried goodies lunch. There we treated Mary since she's the guest of honor from Taiwan. After hours of eating and talking, there were leftovers still, we went for a walk at the Robinsons Place shopping mall to digest the food in our tummies. Some of them did a little shopping. Then off we went to watch Twilight in one of the theaters at the mall. I enjoyed it. We did a little reminiscing of our high school days over coffee at Cafe Breton afterwards. This time, Mary went home with Chloe because they were to buy dried mangoes the next day, Mary will bring these back to Taiwan for her friends. Her stay was short due to unpaid leaves as an employee of less than 1 year. I hope she enjoyed.

*************************************************

I was scheduled for a Pulmonary Function Test today by the doctor I saw yesterday because of my cough that I thought was Asthma. While I was waiting, I got bored and took a picture of their glittery tree using my phone. Sorry for the blurry photo.

The test was a bit tiring as I had to breathe through my mouth and I was told to expel all air from my lungs, to inhale with all my might and to pant fast with deep inhaling, several times. I even coughed towards the end of the test. I was a bit light-headed afterwards. Then, I had an X-ray of my lungs done. 3 films with different positions, I wonder why.

I was happy that my hubby offered to come fetch me. So, while I was waiting for him (while people-watching, too), I took this snapshot of the Christmas tree at the lobby.

Regretfully, we don't have one at home. I'll just post this picture of the tree at my workplace. It's a budgeted tree, so it might look a little "malnourished".

I helped decorate it. What do you think? Here is a photo of the other decors, to compensate, I suppose.

There's a nice Christmas tree over at Momisodes, take a peek here.

Anyway, the technician over at the Pulmonary Department said that my results were high. It meant that I have no Asthma, it may be I am just having an allergic reaction. Thank God!
