Balcony, A Poem

Balcony
There is a place in my house before
It is located on the second floor
Sliding glass doors open to it
At night with warm lighting it is lit
It needs no fan to ventilate
It was like I was at heaven's gate
I valued my time spent here
Being alone with no one to hear
A little roof and then the sky
They have heard and seen me cry
I would take my place on the ledge
Hand on grills for on the edge
I felt tingles down my body
Afraid to fall and break unevenly
Journal open and pen poised
Thoughts were out but not voiced
My face upwards and catching the wind
A lovely place to clear the mind
Ceramic, pebbles, and tiles
Here to welcome guests with smiles
Looking down at the gate that's red
Here, countless books I have read
A place of connection to the Lord
Lifting up prayers with my heart's words
I would look over to the empty lot
Across walls, and built upon it's not
I would wonder if snakes there roam
I hoped they wouldn't enter our home
Here, there were dreams that were formed
And shattered after it had stormed
As flood waters rushed in everywhere
That was the view from up there
Here, our wet and cold dog stayed
On the second floor we waited and prayed
But, as soon as the sun shone through
I rushed here to see if the streets dried, too
It held a hope that the nightmare was over
Like how God offers strength forever

a little roof and then the sky

When I think back upon this part of my parents' home, I realized that it was kind of my sanctuary. I went there when I felt sad. I also went there to be inspired to write more poems, apart from drawing inspiration from the Bible. I have always loved composing poetry. I went there whenever I wanted to connect with God, to look at the clouds and to talk with Him. About the flood waters, my parents' place would be quite flooded whenever it would rain for days. The whole first floor was submerged in water during the typhoon Ondoy. Over there, it was great to be on the balcony because the house was situated far from the avenue where cars pass by. But here, I couldn't stay very long on the balcony because of the pollution from the public utility jeeps, the tricycles and the private cars that always pass through the street outside our home. The balcony here is very "public" as many passers-by walk along the street thus, I wouldn't dare cry!

A Poem About Caleb

My Baby Boy

What's with a baby boy
To a mother is so dear?
Is it the impish hint when
He grins from ear to ear?

How about his boisterous laughter?
And the mischievous twinkle
Found in his eyes. Or when he's
Up to something, his face begins to crinkle.

It's amazing how he gravitates
Toward cars and balls,
How he picks himself up
When on his butt he falls.

He will play alone, then
Suddenly craves for attention.
What he requires is
A playful kind of affection.

Being tickled he likes,
Or held upside-down.
He also likes funny faces,
A shocked face or a frown.

Animals are a source of amusement,
Surely a visit to the zoo shall be fun.
A growing boy also needs space
To climb, and tumble, and run.

Silly boy breaks into a unique dance.
At times, he does a big hooray.
For making mom laugh with his antics,
He needs lots of sleep at the end of the day.

Mushy After Valentine's

Why do I love thee?
Let me enumerate reasons.
First, is for loving me,
Through different seasons.
You talked with my parents,
Even though you were nervous.
You are smart yet simple,
Proof that you're unfastidious.
Your promise to take care of me
Is evident in your deeds.
One way you show your love
Is meeting my many needs.
I love how our thoughts jive,
Finishing each other's sentences.
We also differ, but complement each other,
Our personalities in many instances.
Being hands-on with the kids
Makes me love you even more.
I hope they acquire from you
Your kindness and sense of humor.

There'll be more of you
To love in the future,
As we journey a life together
Hand in hand and each step sure.
Moments of joy and difficulties
In my heart I will treasure.

This is in (late) answer to Lizz's question (and giveaway): Why do I love my guy? I was going to submit my entry last weekend but my daughter and I got sick, and then my hubby also then my baby boy. Until now, I am still coughing my lungs out and cannot eat chocolate. :-(

A Grateful Heart's Poem

There's so much to be thankful for.
I cannot list them all!
First is the One who
Catches me when I fall.
Not literally, of course!
He is Jesus Christ.
The love He has for us
Shouldn't leave us surprised.
Next is my husband
Who understands and cares
All about me,
Even wears and tears.
Third is my daughter,
Who's sweet and strong-willed.
Lets me learn patience
In the mommying field.
Fourth is my baby boy
Whose smiles I treasure,
So cute, lovable. Brings
Happiness I cannot measure.
Fifth are my family
And friends who really
Are there to inspire
And support me.
Lastly, I'm thankful
For each blessing received,
For each morning, a chance
That dreams may be achieved.

Uplifted by God

Sometimes I wonder
If I am made for this
My steps they falter
There's no one I could please

With mistakes here and there
Burdened with worry
Laden with each care
Don't want to be me

Am I meant to be?
A wifey of his?
These two babies' mommy?
Am I cut out for this?

But God has blessed me
This gift I received
A lovely family
I can, He believed

When confusion I feel
He pours strength into me
With grace my heart He fills
I'm where I'm supposed to be

Beneath The Surface

Only You, Lord, can really see
Beneath the surface that is truly me
Above, appearing calm and cool
I know You, Lord, cannot be fooled
To believe that I am fine
In this tumultuous life of mine

Only You, Lord, can really hear
The trickling of my lonely tears
The breaking of my fragile heart
Being shattered part by part
Only You, Lord, really listen
To my words that are unspoken

Only You, Lord, can really feel
My pain that is so real
Underneath, there's ceaseless turmoil
Constantly in useless toil
Only You, Lord, truly understand
Only You, Lord, taking my hand

Leading me back to sanity
Opening my heart's eyes to see
All blessings surrounding me
The truest friend You'll always be

Note: I wrote this when I was reflecting on a low point in my life. God was there for me, only He, and in the form of my daughter. I thought I'd go crazy without her, it's cliche but I need to be strong for her. She was so sweet, she saw me crying one time, so she shared her precious stuffed bear with me.

New Year Brings...

In an instant, it seems things have changed
In an instant, our lives rearranged
Into correct perspectives
Thinking over our objectives
Another chance to start again
To mend the ways we had back then
To reach the goals as we hope
Courage for trials to cope
Easier said than done
Challenges make a strong one
Stronger faith in the Lord
To keep as we gave our word

Song Of Dreams

Here in my song
My dreams I realize
I know I will soar
High up to the skies

Places I'll go
My wings will take me there
Lovely scenes I'll see
I'll leave behind each care

Dreaming of a castle
Built on em'rald hills
There I am a princess
Don't need to pay the bills

I can be a fairy
With magic to spare
With a wave of my wand
Needs are met everywhere

In my song, anything I believe
Will take place
All the tears, from the hurts will be gone
From my face
And my heart, with each beat it skips to
The melody
In my song, I am whole, I am me
I am free

A Call From God

More than a month had passed since the devastating typhoon Ondoy hit our country. Our capital was targeted and many people lost their homes and material possessions, what's worse was that there were lives lost, too. Massive relief efforts were made, especially by those fortunate to have their homes intact.

What struck down our homes,
When the strong winds blew,
Thick curtains of rain
Made pools of flood water,
Thick, soft carpets of mud;

Also struck a chord,
A call to realize:
God's longing for us,
To look upon heaven
As our permanent home,
Earthly things fade away.

We are very blessed,
In turn be a blessing
To those in dire need,
Thus serving the Lord,
This is our ministry.

If I Were Still A Baby...

...I'd write this for my mom. I would like to imagine my own daughter telling me these lines.

Mommy Parts

Your head swim with thoughts of me
Eyes see my beauty
Nose inhale my baby scent

Cuddling my head with your neck
And with your shoulder
When I'm sleepy or afraid

Your arms never tire of these:
Hugging, carrying
'Til your back tingles and aches

Whenever I get booboo's
Your lips kiss away
The pain, the tears your hands wipe

Your legs they run beside me
Across our home and
Throughout your life's journey

Innocence

You don't reside here
Behind my eyes
Anymore
You faded away
As time goes by
Gradually
Looking for you
In my soul's depth
All these years
Where are you now?
Sometimes I ask
When I'm lost
Now as I sit here
On the crossroads
Suddenly
You come to me
With your big round eyes
And cute lips
Feeling them on mine
Your arms 'round my neck
I feel loved
So we meet again
This time face to face
Innocence

Should I Go? Or Should I Go?

THE GYM

Catchy dance music blaring
Bodies are a-twirling
Hands and feet in the air
Matted wet and sweaty hair

Treadmills, bikes a-whirring
Dumbbells, weights are a-banging
On the floor and each other
Stepper not getting higher

Heaving chests and heaving sighs
Pinching arms, abs and thighs
Are they getting smaller?
Are they getting harder?

The vain and the unhealthy
The av'rage and the wealthy
I guess a reg'lar should be
For someone as fat as me

Hopefully Yours...

HOPE

What prompts us to strive?
What keeps us alive?

Where do we get the drive?

What fuels our desire?
What keeps our dreams on fire?

What clothes those we admire?

We love even if we're hurt.

Here sorrow and joy spurt,
Why words of love we blurt.

God planted this in our hearts,
Of us this is a part.

Hope gives us a fresh start.

Chance to make life better.

The courage to weather.

God's hope makes us stronger.

The Street

The sun sets on this side
The road's just two-lane wide
Lined with some trees and houses
And posts with wires a-mess
Passenger jeeps they roam
Trikes have a noisy "vroom!"
Some guys play basketball
Seems like a playground for all
Children climb, shout and run
And gangs find fighting fun
Thieves are causes for alarms
Mothers with babes in arms
Dads, grandparents loiter
Neighbors call to each other
Plastic bags in their hands
With ingredients for viands
Some meat, veggies and fruits
Herbs, spices and some roots
Vendors with their food or wares
Dogs, cats, mice except hares

I'd do it too, I fear
To make a home right here

Dreams A-Calling

Dreams,
With their Gossamer hands
Weaving their way towards
Heart.
Beckoning,
Tugging on her to stand,
To sing, to step, to start
Journeying.
The road
Steep, rocky,yet so grand.
A golden fulfillment's
The prize.

Of Love And Laughter

Wouldn't it be nice?
If the world's full of laughter,
Laughter from the heart.

Laughing with loved ones
My heart bursts with love and joy
My world's lovelier

This picture of my daughter and me was taken by my hubby when we went to La Mesa Ecopark last Sunday. Don't you love the background? It's so green!

On your birthday

Thankful I am to our God
For He had created you
And then He gave you to me
I'm thankful to your parents
For together raising you
Opening your eyes and heart
To the world we both embrace
Thank you for being yourself
The you I fell in love with
Special guy with a kind heart
There's no one else I look for
The gem is right beside me
And my heart is filled with joy
Knowing it's for a lifetime
Age gracefully together
Days ahead filled with much love
Each moment with you's a gift
That I will cherish for life

Hai wanna be fat

Some people write about health tips and proper diet, a topic that I feel guilty reading about. Oftentimes, I am confused as to which health plan would really work. Here, I wrote a poem on something I do know about: how to be fat.

Cease exercising.
Eat white bread and rice always,
Even at midnights.

Munch on a hotdog
Every time of everyday.
Drink sugared liquids

With burger and fries.
Don't forget oil on pizza!
Then lie down to rest

Your swollen tummy
And your sagging butt. And then,
Do it all again.

This little mommy's haiku

This little mommy
Held hands with her precious
Both learning to walk

This little mommy
Read stories to her precious
Encouraging talk

Each on their journey
One's discovering the world
With all her senses

With patience and love
I'm embracing motherhood
And its nuances

This little mommy
Wants to be the best mommy
For her li'l precious

This she's achieving
Baby step by baby step
Be mommy pious

A darker shade of purple

Were there times when you feel like you have a dark side that is wanting to come out, but you suppress it because you have a goody goody image to protect?
Once, I let this dark side surface, and a poem was born. The witch in me talked. (*thunder sound and some scary music*)

No one's hurt me like you do
I'm gonna get me a rag doll
And pretend that it's you
Get scissors and cut the hair
Get a knife and rip the chest
To the stomach and even down there
Twist the legs at an odd angle
Separate the arms from the body
With a rope the neck I'll strangle
Prick and ruin the eyes with a pin
With the knife, slit the mouth even wider
Get a handful of cockroaches and stuff them in

One day you were found cold and dead
Looking like a rag doll with an ugly head

Are you scared of me now? (*evil laugh*)

Well, that happened only once. Just one episode, and no reruns.

I swear, I felt like a mangkukulam* with this poem. It's frightening!

*mangkukulam: n. bewitcher, sorcerer, witch
